I have the same question, but first of all, a Compaq Preario 2200 is not a laptop technology dead end, but a desktop technology dead end. The single expansion slot (normally occupied by a Compaq 33.6k modem) does not appear to be exactly EISA (it's a card edge connector, but shorter than normal EISA). So the question still stands--can you get a Network Interface Card (indeed, any card) for this machine (without dealing with Compaq's tech support, i.e, a third part card and driver)?

As to a NiC for a Presario 2200. I posed the same Q to Compaq in August, and received a reply saying there wasn't one. I hunted for about 2 months before giving up. Don't waste your time as well.

I believe there's other alternative such as
parallel port adapter. This adapter uses
parallel port to access network. Serial
port can be use as pirnter port but slower
than parallel.

The following links mention parallel port
ethernet adapter:

w95-11.htm

NICinstall/pickacard.html

The product, Xircom PE3, is hard to find.
Xircom doesn't make them anymore.
eBay is the place to find.

you can get a slim, 8-bit ISA NIC to fit that slot (it IS and ISA slot, just 8 bit not 16 bit) The only 8 bit NICs out there have AUI or CoAx or BNC , but NOT rj45. Never fear, they make LOTS of AUI=rj45 converters

I finally got my Xircom Pecket Ethernet
Adapter PE3 from eBay. I hooked it up to
my Compaq Preario 2200 (Windows 95)
and it works perfectly. Now I can do
networking with my other two computers,
Apple Performa 6400/G3 and Dell
Dimension L700cx, plus surfing internet
via DSL. Since Xircom Pecket Ethernet
Adapter PE3 does not come with Widows
95 driver (only DOS, NetWare...etc), you
have to visit Xircom site to download the
software. The download site is:
http://www.xircom.com/dl/detail/0,1306,1-
840-1_93Z1-840-1_20-20Z,00.html
It comes with an instruction that tells you
how to install Windows 95 driver.

I've found two that work, and both are 10baseT (twisted pair)
The following cards are 8/16 bit ISA and work in the 2200's lone ISA slot:
3Com Etherlink II
D-Link DE-220You must remove the metal mounting bracket or modify it to seal the modem opening in the case, and you must file off the top part of the ISA edge connector. WARNING This will limit you to using IRQs less than 8, you may need to fiddle with Windows to make the card detect properly.
I'm currently trying an ISA 8/16 bit PnP card... wish me luck.
