Hi, I have a Audiodrive ES1868F ESS sound card which my cd-rom drive is connected to. I can not seem to get the cd-rom drive to work and the system asks for a MSCDEX.exe file to load the cd-rom or something. I have the cd-rom drivers but I can not install them because win95 keeps asking me to put in the win95 CD which I can not since my cd-rom drive is not working. The system device says the sound card is working fine and has all the drivers but I can not hear any sound through the pc, maybe because I don't have any speakers connected?? only the internal speaker which does not make any sound. My cd-rom drive is a Sony CDU311 and I have made sure all the cable's are in right places. It's set to master since it's the only drive on the cable. I have been searching the net for help and I have learned that there have been problems with this sound card when you are connecting a cd-rom to it, but I can't figure out exactly what I am to do to try to fix the problem. The cd-rom drive is quite dead!! LOL, it's like it's powerless, it does not go off at all, and I can not open the door or anything. Can the drive act this way if it lacks the right drivers?
Help!!!
Arndís

For the sound card you do need speakers plugged in!
The CD Rom door should still open and close with/without driver,
Check power supply to the drive,
Look to see if you have another power plug in the box not used and try that in the
CD Rom drive,

Arndis, boot from your floppy that has cdrom support and copy the win95 folder from the CD to the hard drive. Then when the system asks you to put in the Win95 CD, point it to the win95 folder on the hard drive instead.

Disregard response number 2 Arndis. If win95 doesn't recognize the cdrom drive you will have to load the driver using config.sys and autoexec.bat.

You will need a line something like the following in config.sys
devicehigh=c:\cdrom.sys /d:mscd0001
You will have to alter the c:\cdrom.sys
to the location and name of your cdrom driver

And a line something like the following in autoexec.bat
loadhign c:\windows\command\mscdex.exe /d:mscd0001
Make sure that the line in autoexec.bat points to the location of your mscdex.exe file

Your Sony CDrom is probably proprietary. That means that Windows will not find it unless the the sound card is working. It is not an IDE drive which the computer can automatically detect and install. You will have to load the correct drivers for your sound card which can be found here:
http://www.esstech.com/Technical/drivers/downloadable/drivers/driver.htm#These
Next, expand the driver to a folder or floppy disk. Go to start menu, then to settings, then control panel. Scroll down to system and click. Use device manager and locate your sound card (If its listed there.) Next, doubleclick the sound card listing and go to driver up on the top. Choose update driver or reinstall driver. Refer the add new hardware wizard to the folder you stored the driver in and that should do it.

First of all, take the jumpers off the cd rom drive. Do not set it to master. Windows will set it by default to secondary slave. This is where it is supposed to be and it is ok to be there.

Second you need a boot disk that has cd rom support on it. This one will do nicely:

CD ROM BOOT DISK

Now follow advice of post #1 and check your power supply plugs to see they are secure and plug in a set of speakers to plug that says speakers, not mic or line in.

Now reboot using boot disk you just got from above.
Good luck,
Terri

win9x bootdisk will not activate a cd-rom attached to the sound card. if yo7u do not believe - try it sometime - as for the jumpers it should be master / slave / cable select.

I have have many people use this boot disk and said it works very well. And as for the jumpers of master/slave/cable select, those are only the options on the drive you are giving me, unfortunately cd rom drives do not have them labled clearly like that. Only have the pins there where you can put jumper plugs on them. Now providing you are plugging this cd rom drive into your slot on mother board that is labled: secondary IDE or CD Rom Drive, windows will install it defaultly into a secondary/slave setting. Don't belive me ask around. Post a new message and ask everyone to check the settings on their cd rom drives to see what they are. You will find I am correct on this. Dumb girl or not, I do know my computers. Have built around 7 of them now from scratch or bare/bare bones. I think I know what I am talking about. Thank you.

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for all your replies, wow you are all so wonderful and helpful. I have tried some of you advises but nothing seems to work. I am beginning to think that the cd-rom drive is dead. The drivers for the sound card are installed OK but windows can not find the cd-rom drive in any way. I am about to give up on it, but I might keep trying for a while. Thank you again for all your support.
bye,
Arndís from Iceland

Arndis, if the drivers are installed using config.sys and autoexec.bat you can try accessing the cdrom drive from Dos.
That will prove/eliminate windows as the problem.

Arndis, are you sure your cables for your cd rom drive are on correctly? Have you tried reversing them? And is it plugged onto the mother board, or the sound card? That would make a big differnce. I think that if being plugged onto sound card sound card must be activated and working to find cd rom. These are just a few more troubleshooting suggestions.
