OS: Win 98 SE
CPU/Ram: Not sure
Model/Manufacturer: IBM
Comment:

I have an IBM laptop running Win 98 SE. When I turn the power on I get an error message with the numbers 00161 and oo163 and the system will not boot. It has an OK link and a Cancel link. If I click on cancel it does nothing, if I click OK another Window pops up with the wrong date and time. I put in the correct date and the error message pops up again. Now I take out the CMOS battery and do these steps again after I power it on and still get the message. This time after I put in the correct date, the error goes away and the OS boots. After I put the CMOS battery back in and reboot, I get the error message again. Could this mean I need a new CMOS battery? If this is not the problem, can someone please tell me what might be.

It could be the main batery or the CMOS Baterry or I believe there are also one or two smaller batteries, take your pick!

Good link Walter.

I would suggest the OP bookmark that link on a different computer.

Walter,

The laptop is not mine, it's a friends. I will suggest to him tomorrow about looking into buying a CMOS battery. I will let you know if that fixes the problem. That's what I think it may be. If anybody else has any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the response Walter. My friend and I went to the store and purchased a new CMOS battery and replaced it. There is no longer any problems with the boot process. We put the new battery in and updated the date and time. Everything is now running normal.
