Does the system boot up with the original hard drive only?

No i just thought that the memory of the two drives was too much for the OS to handle!

i tried it with the new one on its own and then the old one on its own!

neither is working now, i think i broke it

So you're saying when you put it back together exactly like it was, it doesn't work? If so, post back the exact error message you get when you attempt to boot up with the original configuration.

Make sure the drive is identified in cmos the same way it was originally--probably as AUTO.

Make sure the drive is connected in the same place on the cable as it was originally. If you changed the jumpers on the drive put them back. Make sure the cable is tightly connected.

If that doesn't help, boot with a 98 bootdisk and at the prompt type fdisk and enter, Y to large disk support if asked. Then option 4. Exactly what does it say?

You can download a 98 SE bootdisk file at someplace like www.bootdisk.com or I can email you one. You can run the fdisk command after booting from it.

Sounds good. I guess for gaming you'd be using XP? If you plan on using 98 be sure to install the chipset drivers immediately after installing the OS. Well, do that for XP too, but 98 will not have drivers for much of the on-board hardware.

You need to run the file you downloaded and it will create the bootdisk. Then make sure the a: drive is the first boot device in cmos/bios setup. Then put the disk in and turn the computer on. When it gets to the a:\> prompt run fdisk as I explained above.
