Michael,
I recently had a similar error on my Win95 PC; mine was Error loading GDI32.DLL
I booted into safe mode, went to my Display Manager, and changed my video settings back to 800x600. See if that does it. If so, I'd visit the home page of your video card manufacturer and see if there's a driver update posted.

I got the exact same problem in my PC.
I started my PC in DOS mode, copied GDI.exe from a PC that runs win95 of same version. The directoryis, say, C:\windows\system\gdi.exe.Depends on your windows installation directory.
Then restart,no problem any more.

WinBlows95 tells me gdi.exe fails to load, and then I immediately get the "it is now safe to turn off your computer" screen, so I can't even boot. Same result from safe mode, so I can't do anything but reinstall, really. WinBlows' safe mode obviously isn't really all that safe. I wonder if MS ever tried to design something that worked worth a damn....
