Last week, I bought a ZIP 250 drive off of ebay advertised as "pulled from a working system" and I tried to install it into my computer and I would get an error message just before the cursor would normally load saying:

Initializing Device IOS: Windows Protection Error Restart your computer

Which I did and I even tried the suggestion on Microsoft's website saying to disable/rename and remove references of DRVSPACE.exe from CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT and I did yet nothing happened. I cannot get this drive to work.

I found a file called IOS.LOG in the Windows folder and inside it was this:

Error issuing int 25h: unit 03, error 0000BABE

The drive functions and lights up when I turn on the computer and it is recognized in the BIOS

I started up with the LOGGED option and found no failiures in the bootlog that were associated with the drive.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Vala, hi everyone

What type of Zip 250 drive, Paralell port, SCSI, USB, Firewire or ATAPI, did you buy?
Have you checked the Iomega support & downloads website?

It's an internal ATAPI drive, I even changed the jumper settings to everything imaginable and it didn't do any good. No, I haven't checked the Iomega website but I didn't think it would do any good since I can't even get into Windows with the drive plugged in.

Thanks,

Reconnect everything as it was before you added the zip drive and see if you no longer get the error.

Also, how do you have it connected--master, slave, primary, secondary? Is there another drive on the cable?

I disconnected it and put everything back the way it was and it was fine. I had the ZIP drive as the secondary IDE master connection because that was the only free one, I have 2 CD drives and they've been in there for years and are STUCK in place and I don't want to rip the connections apart.

Does Windows 98 even support ZIP 250? I have a friend who I emailed who said that Windows 98 only supports ZIP 100.

Thanks,

As far as I know 98 has no problem with the 250 zip drives. The 98 drivers include support for all the zip drives.

I noticed one of the help sites said that changing the bios ID of the zip drive to AUTO or NONE might help. (The OS sees a zip drive from drivers so it doesn't need to be seen by the bios.)

Maybe if you install the drivers with the zip drive disconnected, 98 will set it up OK when you boot up after connecting it.

Also, the jumpers on most of those include setting it up as an a: drive. You don't want that. So ignore the Master A and Slave A settings.

Hi Vala, DAVEINCAPS, hi everyone

"Does Windows 98 even support ZIP 250?"
Iomega Support & Downloads

"...Windows 98 only supports ZIP 100."

Secondary master? You mean to say the ZIP is on the second IDE channel setup as master? Is anything else setup as master on that same channel?

Try disconnecting everything from the second IDE channel and letting the ZIP have that whole channel.
