Please help i am trying to fix a pc at the office that is running on windows 98 and when you turn it on it goes through the normal setup and then comes up with error in config.sys line 3, then on the next line it says C:\SET BLASTER=A240 I2 D1 T4. I am not sure if that has any thing to do with the error but it is on the next line. The computer seems to run fine but I am curious as to what the error means and if will effect the operation of the computer.

Hard to tell what's wrong with line 3 in config.sys without actually seeing it.

If you like, you could post the file here for examination

The set blaster line is to provide sound compatibility for DOS based games etc. - not really needed by Windows itself.

It's in autoexec.bat though.

You can examine/edit/disable config.sys using the msconfig tool.

Sure - autoexec.bat & config.sys aren't really required by Windows, but there can be entries for DOS level virus scanning. Anything else is for compatibility with DOS games & apps - although that can also be accomplished with dosstart.bat

You could examine/edit the files with notepad, but msconfig may be a bit more user-friendly.

If the 'set blaster. . .' line is in config.sys then that's the problem. As jboy says, it should be in autoexec.bat.

Or it could be that everything after line 3 in config.sys is loading OK and the Set Blaster is echoing from autoexec.bat.

If you're not sure, just post back whatever is in config.sys, line 3.

I checked msconfig and it came up with a check box with the words "50 files" beside it under the config.sys tab. Can not open or view these file from here. How can these files be seen?
also when rebooted this command line comes up as being a bad command line
C:\>\windows\SYSTEM\rnr20.dll

Are you sure it's not something like:

FILES=50

?

The dll reference seems like it's (somehow) in autoexec.bat - which would generate an error because it's not a DOS command.

Open C:\config.sys and C:\autoexec.bat with notepad, copy and paste here - probably simplest.

Post back contents of config.sys.

What OS did you have before you attempted the dos 4.0 installation and what OS do you want to have on it?
