Hi
I`m getting a fatal exception when I put a 31/2 floppy in, and a blue screen. It reads OE has occured at 0028:C0044DE2 in VXD VFAT01+00002D6A I have no idea what this says, but can someone walk me thru the fix? I have the original win 98se disk if I need to draw information from it.
Good useful information is much appreciated. Thank you.

Does this happen immediately put the floppy in without doing anything?

Does it happen on more than one floppy, or just on a boot disk for example?

Hi Dereck and Othehill, Yes it happens right when I insert the 3 1/2" floppy I get the blue screen and error code right after I put the disk in.
The floppy light is not on now, and after I insert the floppy I have to reboot to have functionality of my computer, so for now I just leave the floppy alone.
Also one of the cd drives isn`t reading disks for auto start. The so called experts where I just picked my machine back up said it was the drive and wanted to sell me a new one, but I nixed that because I can start it manually still.
Thanks for any future help guys. I could deffinately use it.

OK, first the Auto start. Two things are required to auto start a CD. First, auto start needs to be enabled for that drive and two, the disk needs to have an auto start file on it. If you create your own data disk for instance, it won't auto start, this is normal.
As far as the floppy drive goes, you didn't answer Derek's question. You need to isolate wheather this is a drive or disk problem. First thing to try is to try accessing a known empty floppy. If this doesn't happen under those conditions then there is an issue with the particular disk you are trying to access. If the fisk give a blue screen when accessing a blank floppy disk then there are about 4 things that could be wrong. The easiest thing to try to fix this problem is to go to Device manager and remove both the floppy drive and the floppy controller and reboot, rechacking to see if the same problem still exists. If so then one or more of three hardware components if defective. The floppy drive itself, the cable, or the floppy controller. One other possibility is that the drive is being improperly identified in the BIOS. Boot to the BIOS an check this. The entry should say A: 3.5" 1.44. To troubleshoot the hardware, try to connect a known good floppy drive and cable to the controller and see what happens.

An easier way to check whether the drive itself is faulty or if software is causing the problem, would be to try booting with a floppy.

The OE error is software for sure! Probably two pieces of malware trying to block access at the same time.

Good point rimfire. Booting to dos will eliminate windows entirely.

Hello again. I haven`t tried anything yet, I mis-stated the 3 1/2" floppy problem, I get the error code when I (click) to run the A drive. When the so called technician in the shop was working on the auto-start problem for the E drive I noticed that he had gone into dos to change something. He typed so quickly then had to back space to correct what he had typed, he had done this about 4 times. When he was finished he said it was the drive and wanted to sell me a new one. Bottom line is that the E drive is not connected at all, wires disconnected just sitting in the machine. Now, I`ve recently run my AVG Anti-Virus free edition and all systems seem to check out with an ok under the results column except one says change, and just to the right of that it reads C:\MSDOS.SYS Keep in mind I have not done anything yet, but could this be why I`m getting this error code ? Also the 3 1/2" floppys did work for awhile (a day or so) but now it is to the point I get the error code as soon as I click to run the A drive. I`ve also noticed that the pictures that where on the 3 1/2" diskette are no longer viewable in the sony digital Mavica camera in which they were takin.
To say the least I have little confidence in the so called tech who has worked on this machine for the last time.
Thanks again guys for any help you can provide.

The A drive IS the 3 1/2" floppy drive. I suggest that YOU boot into the BIOS screens and verify the A: drive is stup correctly there. Your signature indicates a custom computer. The most common keystroke required to enter the BIOS is del but could be something else. You need the start repeatedly tapping the appropriate key until the computer opens the BIOS screen. The correct keystroke should be given during the POST screens that appear prior to entering windows. The proper seting for the A drive is A: 3 1/2" 1.44MB. If there are more than one place to select a floppy drive the first one is the one to use with the second one selected as DISABLED. Then save and exit. After entering windows proceed to the Device manager and look at the entry for the disk drives> floppy disk. Highlight the drive entry and then click properties. The entry there should say this device is working properly.

Thanks for all your help Othehill. Maybe I`ll just send you the machine.lol. I'll probably wind up buying a new one, a laptop and use this one as the beater to practice my computer repair skills on.
Thanks again..
