Error: An I?O subsystem driver failed to load
Either a file in the .\iosubsys subdirectory is corrupt, or the system is low on memory.

How to fix??

boot your P.C. wait for the RAM count to finish and then push F8 you will then get a list of different options choose command prompt only and then type the following

cd\windows
del smartdrv.exe

then reboot and away you go.

This happened for me after I loaded Office 2000.. I deinstalled Office 2000 (not game to load it again)....
I edited my windows\system.ini.
In the section under [vcache], I add the line:
maxfilecache=6144

It seems to be working fine now

This happened after installing Office 2000. I remedied it by being very aggressive in removing items from the system devices properties.I left only thr HD controllers (It wouldn't let me delete them) and a few others. I removed everything possible. Problem solved!!

I got the same error message when booting up after I installed the beta of MS Project 2000. Adding the line, maxfilecache=6144 worked for me, as well.

maxfilecache=6144 worked for me as well. The message came up after installing Michael Hooligan's Guide to Your New House. Unfortunately the program won't run, but I think it's something else.

Deleting or renaming smartdrv.exe did nothing for me because I didn't have it. The Maxfilecache did it for me. I was installing DSS Agent. Thank you very much!!! I love the internet!!!

I had this problem, a friend went online, found your advice. I typed in
maxfilecache=6144 to the system.ini file and it worked. I'm extremely grateful, as you all can imagine. Wonder how this happened? Came up after I installed an MP3/CD player...

I'm getting this error message after doing a clean install of Windows 98 second edition. It will not boot into safe mode, and I can not find smartdrv.exe in the windows directory. Any ideas? Please email me if you've seen this before. Thanks.

We get the error message:

"Error: An I?O subsystem driver failed to load
Either a file in the .\iosubsys subdirectory is corrupt, or the system is low on memory."

This is having fully installed Win 98 se on a Cleanly formatted HD, new HP computer, we've tried EVERYTHING!!
We have tried several Windows 98 SE CD's, but to no avail.

PLEASE help us, we really do NOT want to have to install Win 95 on the machine!!

I tried them all, but the problem remains.
I was trying to do defrag on a Windows 95 machine when this error came up.
Is it possible that there is a virus???????
