http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;321339 although likely unrelated by subject title it does however explain:
Quote
CAUSE
You receive one of these error messages when there is a configuration problem with your CD-ROM drive or a problem with the CD-ROM media itself.
End Quote

and goes on to provide a link to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;184410 entitled "How to Use Msinfo32.exe to Optimize CD-ROM Cache Settings".

Sorry, this is what is going on. I bought an HP Photosmart Digital camera. I am trying to load the software onto my Windows 98 computer and it gets to a certain point while copying the files where it says "Error 1304.Error writing to file C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\Diagnostics\Diagnostics\HpSdRes.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory." I have been to the directory with no problems. I click retry and the same thing happens. If I click cancel, the program performs a rollback and nothing is done. Why am I getting this message, how do I fix it? Thanks again.

Sorry but I did understand the essence of the problem.

You do not think it has anything to do with the CD ROM cache settings or the media itself?
That is all that I could find related to that error message.

What do you think it might be?

Regards,
Bryan

I am getting the same problem. I bought an HP 6110 All in one Printer/scanner etc. I am trying to load the software onto my Windows XP with Office 2003 computer and it gets to a certain point while copying the files where it says "Error 1304.Error writing to file C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\Diagnostics\Diagnostics\HpSdRes.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory." I have been to the directory on the hp disc with no problems. I click retry and the same thing happens. If I click cancel, the program performs a rollback and nothing is done. Why am I getting this message. I am getting a similar message in Outlook and when I hit repair it askes for theOffice 2003 disk and then I get the same erroro message with a different .dlll address.Any idea how do I fix it?

I had this problem recently and it affected two of my already installed programs. When I tried to run them they tried to re-install but came up with the error 1304.

After several attempts to search for viruses and trojans, I then ran NETREGOPT which is a freeware utility to compact and optimise the registry. This worked for me. Problems solved. I hope it does for you.

Hi all,

I have this problem too with Windows XP Pro SP1a & a HP PSC 2210 printer. When trying to install the printer driver/software, it gets to a certain point during the "copying files" stage & then stops with a "Error 1304" claiming that it can't copy a DLL file into the HP folder in Program Files.

I have over 40GB free on this drive, have run Scandisk, am logged in as Administrator & have full rights to this folder, & just about everything else I can think of to fix this without success.

Has anyone found a fix for this before I blow the whole disk away & reinstall everything?

Cheers,
Quambie

This problem may occur if the Administrators Group does not have write access to the All Users/ Documents folder. To resolve this problem, the Administrators Group must have write access to the All Users/ Documents folder. To give the Administrators Group write access, follow these steps:

1. Start your computer by using an administrator account.
2. To open a command prompt, click Start, click Run, type CMD.EXE, and then click OK.
3. Type cacls.exe "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Documents" /G BUILTIN\Administrators:F, and then press ENTER.
4. When you read the prompt Are you sure (Y/N)?, press Y.
5. Type cacls.exe "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Documents" /G System:F, and then press ENTER.
6. When you read the prompt Are you sure (Y/N)?, press Y.
7. Type cacls.exe "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Documents" /G BUILTIN\Users:R, and then press ENTER.
8. When you read the prompt Are you sure (Y/N)?, press Y.
