I`ave just helped a mate move,he gave me this laptop. It was left in his garage for at least 2 years.
When i turn it on it comes up with the following errors 00173,08611,00163,.
I have no instructions with it.

The 163 and 173 refer to the cmos battery. You will need to replace it. Then enter the configuration utility and set the date and time.

You've lost the configuration data. Probably due to the backup battery being run down. You'll have to dig around inside and replace it.

Look around on the IBM site, although there's been changes lately. You (up to recently) could download the user and the "hardware maintenance" manual for those.

It doesn't sound real good!

1780 means a seek error on the primary hard drive.

8611 returns a system bus error.

Taking these at face value, it would susgest that the mainboard and hard drive need replacing. It's worth having a look around bios and see if you can find any problems there. The hard drive problem might just require correctly identifying the drive. The system bus error, I'm not sure about.
