Sorry guys, just found this now.

RAPI.DLL is only missing when you haven't installed windows CE Services on your System AND when you try to install the drivers for the Windows CE platform. On a windows 9x you need to go to CONTROL PANEL, add modem, the driver is on the root of your CD and in the MODEM directory

as for Windows NT, go to http://mobileinternet.ericsson.se where you can download the Quickbeam Suite 3.0 which is an infra-red suite for NT4 that allows seamless infra-red communiction with any infra-red device including your Ericsson SH888. This suite is a full version and is available to all Ericsson Users.

Furthermore there's no reason to hate us, if you have a problem just call, fax or e-mail your local Helpdesk which will help in an adequate manner. (of course I can only vouch for my country but I've never seen a reason for which the other countries' service would be worse)

I have just bought an Ericsson SH888 which I hoped to connect to my Psion 3C. This appears to be impossible as the "RS232" cable is not a true implementation. Also Mobile Office suite won't install on my (non-IrDA) Desktop using supplied cable. I think I have followed the Ericsson manual to the letter, but the install routine exits at approx 90%, when it creates a profile. Please help me!

Hi again,

The Ericsson SH888 can't be made to function with a PSION 3 series, you need a series 5 (or higher) to make this combination to work.

The Ericsson SH888 needs infra-red when using the cable because of the nature of the internal modem: it expects any command in the IRDA protocol. Hence you always need infra-red installed, even when using the cable, to make the translation between protocols.

Regarding the Velo500 CE: verify that the latest script is used (downloadable at http://mobileinternet.ericsson.se), verify that you can find a SH888 installed on your Velo500. If this has been done and you still can't make a connection, then it's best to contact your local Helpdesk by telephone for a more direct approach in solving your problem.

Hi again,

If it can't find MAPI32.DLL: make sure that you've installed exchange and messaging services on your windows platform.
Installing an e-mail client such as Outlook should do the same thing. However, when working with more advanced versions of outlook (the ones you buy or that come with Office Suites e.g. Outlook 97,98,2000) you need to install your outlook in "Corporate/Workgroup" mode, NOT in "Internet Only" mode.

Using Windows NT4, I have managed to get the SH888 connected to my laptop and using the Mobile Office 1.1.1.20. Sends and receives SMS fine.

Is it possible to use the SH888 as a modem in dial up networking to connect to my office. When trying to configure the modem doesn't appear in the drop down list entries.

The SH888 does appear in the list of modems in control panel, but isn't available for use within dial-up networking.

Hi everybody,

don't forget: when operating on NT4, you have to add any modem ,that you wish to use with a dial-up networking connection, to the Remote Access Services else it will not appear.

Hi,
I've read on the ericsson website about the firmware upgrade that the SH888 needs to make it work with Windows 2000 over IRDA, but the UK Ericsson data support people gave me service centres that don't know anything about firmware upgrades.

I've also determined that you need:

Phone Firmware: PRG 991022 1015
IR Firmware : IRVER 991223 1046

My firmware is:

PRG 990212 and IRVER 980408 1035

What do I ask for at the service centre, as soon as I start talking about reprogramming the phone they say they can't do it. - what should I be asking for?

Thanks.

Martyn.

Hello everyone,

To obtain this soft just contact your local Helpdesk and make sure that they contact the Ericsson Certified Service Point of your choice, so that it has enough info to make the flash-update. If not they'll at least be able to offer you another solution.

In other words: contact your HelpDesk first :) before visiting a Service Point.
(they also should have access to this soft)

A little remark for people eager to upgrade to MS Windows 2000 PRO: at this moment only a dial-up networking connection will function, other functionality is not yet implemented. (do take this in consideration, reformatting never is nice)

Hi Christopher,

Only one solution: use thrid party infra-red drivers. Extended Systems have nice ones for Windows 98 (http://www.extendedsystems.com) called Quickbeam Suite. Those who have downloaded IR drivers for NT4 from our Mobile Internet will probably recognise their name. Of course there are many others (just seek the web) that are no doubt as good, this is just soft I personally had good experiences with, this does NOT express an official view on the subject from Ericsson.

sorry (was on holiday:)

Michael: can you find the mapi32.dll file on your system? Probably not, in which case you need to install the Microsoft Messaging System which will install this file.
:\tools\oldwin95\Messaging\eng\wms.exe
just run wms.exe

Win Fax PRO: I have tested all available Winfax PRO versions and have noticed that our GSM modems will function with version 7.5 (or higher). The rest are usually just configuration problems. Remember to put in the correct Fax class. Also configuring it as a non-TAPI modem in Winfax Pro sometimes helps.

Berndt: I'm sorry but I don't speak Swedish.
If your system is missing RAPI.DLL then haven't installed Windows CE Services.
You do not need to install the modem for CE if you don't have a CE palmtop or handheld PC. It's not necessary for desktop PCs.

Hi everyone,

Again, the option 'Install Infrared Modem for Windows CE' is NOT supposed to be installed if you don't have a CE PDA. For those who do not know what CE is: Microsoft Windows CE is an operating system like EPOC, destined to be used on little Palmtop computers. If you don't have a CE or don't have CE Services installed, then you'll get the can't find RAPI.DLL complaint.

Cable connection: your infra-red software needs to be configured on your serial port, so that it will connect via infra-red protocol through your PC's serial port via the SH888's cable . So basically, select your serial port as the base port of the infra-red device/software. e.g. Infra-Red support on COM1, providing application support on COM4 and LPT3

Win98 will not function via cable when using the standard MS drivers, you'll need Third Party drivers to use cable on Win98.

Hello all,

to obtain a dial-up networking connection in Win2000 please verify that you've followed these steps:

1. lay the phone in front of your PC, it should be recognised by win2K's IR software
2. create a new dial-up connection, when asked which type you wish to create, choose 'connection to a private network'
3. give in the number you wish to dial

This should produce a working dial-up networking connection for you to use.

If this does not work then you better contact one of our Helpdesks since it might be a configuration problem.

Hi Harold,
Thank you for your input here.
A similar problem;
I have an I 888 World phone which I understand works essentially the same way as anSH 888.
I have a new IBM Think Pad (600X) running Windows 98.
Set up communications software Message Suite which was running fine, but then one day for no reason it dissappeared. I have tried re-installing with great difficulty and find that I have the same related problems as many in this chat. Software will not load at about 85% and gives error message that modem is nt properly installed...I beleive it is as the infrared sensor picks it up and dial up has it too.
The problem I think I have is that I have a serious problem with my Infrared set up as every time I open the PC it gives an error message. I since tried to force load Win95 IrDA driver but thsi doesn't work either.

I have since found out that with Win98 (as the Ericsson CD indicates) is preloaded with IrDA driver/software.

For to whom it may apply IBM www.IBM.com where you can load the driver for 98 again if you have erased it which it appears I have...could not find it in regedit anywhere.

Hope this may help someone.

SUBJ: Ericsson SH888 and Windows 98SE via wire: solved! I like to join! :-)

1) Verify the exact name of the COM port you're connecting the wire.(ex: COM2)

2) Download from http://www.extendedsystems.com file QBS3329x.exe (search for "Quickbeam" with internal engine) (Thanks to Harold Brinkhof! :-)) ) and execute it, then choose custom installation and pick only infrared drivers.

3) Select the COM port you're connecting the wire (ex:COM2)

4) Choose the name of the virtual COM and LPT ports you're building (ex:COM5 and LPT3) and complete installation

5) Reboot

6) While phone is connected, infrared monitor will detect it and prompt for the right modem drivers: PRESS CANCEL! It wants load it through a *real* COM port, not the *virtual*, hanging up so the computer!

7) Go to Control Panel, Modem and search for a new modem (Add): even if modem isn't detected, force installation, giving as search path the CD-ROM drive (Naturally you must have the Ericsson factory CD in tray! ;-)). Choose virtual port as connection port (ex:COM5).

8) Reboot

9) Install the Ericsson Office Suite from the factory CD-ROM

I agree with all the dissatisfied SH888 owners who have complained about the lack of connectivity. Surely Ericsson should have provided ongoing support for their Mobile Office Suite on systems other than Windows_95? Maybe its not a good idea to buy another Ericsson in future? I don't appreciate vague informal suggestions of searching the Web for "other" infra-red driver software, especially after having paid for the product to begin with. I notice that Ericsson still fails to declare the compatibility of their infra-red link in the specifications for NEW mobile phones. Are we (the customers) really so stupid and willing to be taken advantage of?

I try to use the "Modem Utility" in the "Controll Panel" but when I try to make the "Diagnosys/More Information" the answer is "no connected modem" if I use the IR port.
When I connect the phone to the serial port, the "Diagnosys" reports all "Error" to the AT command,
I try both Win95 & 98.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I have bought a SH888 and i try to make a connection to Internet, using the Remote Access Connection with my Win98 PC.
First I've installed th IR driver;
Then I've installed the Mobile Office Suite 1.0;
Everithing works fine. The Suite makes a call absolutely regularly.
But when I try to make a Internet connection I soon receive (after "Connecting") a "Disconnecting".
If I use the Hyperterminal so send direct commands to the modem, like:
ATDT 2088
I always obtain, after 2 seconds, a "NO CARRIER"
No way to obtain something else.
This problem is probably the same of Hachid Rafid (Response Number 37)
Regards

Can someone help me?
