EPSON Printer -error while spooling

January 9, 2005 at 10:11:51
Specs: Win 98 SE, Pentium III

Have an Epson Stylus Color 600 printer. Set up to share on a network. Always had no trouble until recently. When I try to print on the local computer, I get a message "Error while spooling to "" Unable to start the Spool Manager". But if I print from one of the networked machines it prints fine!

The Spool Manager is called EPSPMGR4.EXE for which a shortcut is included in the Start Menu. When I click it, nothing happens. It used to bring up the spooler.

I have delete the printer driver & reinstalled with original driver. Deleted and installed more up to date driver. Nothing.

I've seen others have this problem when I Google around, but no good solutions (except for a site which wants me to pay $9.95/month to acces the solution.

try Reinstalling the printer software. That might reinstall the Spool Manager.

Thanks for you replies.

ham30: I did try to reinstall both the original and an updated version.

OtheHill: This FAQ requires you to start up the Spool Manager. But that's the problem, the spool manager (EPSPMGR4.EXE) won't start.

I found a note by someone on fix They quoted EPSON in Australia saying to ignore their own supplied printer drivers and instead to use the printer driver on the WIN98 CD.

I did and it works! It no longer uses the EPSON spooler, but uses the regular Windows spooler window which I've seen at work and on other networks.
