I don't get what the big fuss is about ending support. Win 95 was ended supportwise in 2001 and they STILL have online help for it. Are they deleting the online help this time for Win 98 and ME?

Not sure what they'll do with the data base but W95 is closely linked to 98 so that might make a difference - they could opt to remove the lot.

I've not tried searching MS for W31 data but I'd be surprised if it is still there. Happy to be surprised tho.....

Well, I don't do any updates at all so it won't affect me. I think I read on that page that they ARE keeping online support available. I don't think they have Win 3.1 support because it seems they don't even have a website for it. The earliest website they have is for Win 95. www.microsoft.com/Windows95 or something like that.

As far as Win3.x updates they are at the link below yet one must know what one wants (sort by date).

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/

Hope they don't dump the entire 9x into an ftp!

Curiousity, does the link at #8 work for everyone else? It didn't for me but maybe I've got something disabled or not working.

Re #9

Hey, spooks in my machine. Suddenly it came up when I was on another website. Didn't get far, just an animated "flashlight & icon" centre screen and nothing else despite waiting quite a while.

It worked for me. But it came up as a Windows Explorer window instead of Internet Explorer. What is FTP anyway?

It's full of several hundred EXE files, some are named after Windows programs like WININET.exe and some are just alpha numeric names.

Also, are you using the WHOLE link or are you skipping the FTP: before the FTP.MICROSOFT.COM? You need to use the ENTIRE LINK as it appears below

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/

It works for me, amazingly, in Internet Exploder.

However, if you back up one folder, there's an index, and there is a LOT MORE STUFF than just for W3xx in there.

Heh - What is Google?

No I had the whole address. Just put it in IE Address bar again and absolutely nothing happened.

Oh well, looks like I've a little problem to solve.

I looked up FTP and I didn't quite understand what the definition was and I was hoping someone could explain it a little better than the internet.

Well, ftp was before http, that's all i know.

Lots of files on technet including the entire Win98 reskit (nice toys in that one).

The .exe's in MSLFILES are self extractors (the old kind, into the same folder). I have an index around here somewhere, anybody want it? Most are fixes/updates for something or example build files for one of the compilers.

Sometimes that site says "Restricted, you do not have access permission" but a retry works. Love the flashlight.

Re #14. Turned out to be very simple, just had to tick "Use Passive FTP" in IE advanced options. I now realise I'd been there way back and suspect going broadband messed it up.

I've been trying to reinstall 98 SE and "fix" my desktop since last April. Is it even worth my time to continue this or should I just give the whole system to charity and buy new?! It's obvious I'm already having problems with finding good support for my 98 SE this could prove to be even more difficult down the line.

Or, is there a way to convert 98 SE to XP?

You should be able to fix the old girl, with a little help from this forum. Mine's still going just fine and the last time I reformatted was Nov 1999. There's still plenty of stuff around to fix-up W98.

I would definitely advise that you start a new post though, describing the exact problems you are having. This is an old post and it's likely I'm the only one watching. We will also get your machine's spec that way, which will help us to help you.

You just choose Windows 95/98 at top left of this page and away you go. You'll probably have to register but that is free. The only reason for it is to keep control on any jokers that start posting.

The only way to upgrade to XP is to buy the MS CD (shame). You need to look at your specs to make sure your machine will run OK on it. Meeting the minimum spec isn't enough because it could be as slow as hell - worse than W98.
