The hard drive may not have EMM386.exe or VIDE-CDD.SYS where your floppy expects them to be.
You might start by downloading a good boot disk from www.bootdisk.com. Then run scandisk on the C: drive to check it out.

Normally a bootdisk won't access files from the hard drive in order to boot up. Or if the files are missing from the bootdisk then you should get another bootdisk.

Are you sure you're actually booting from the floppy drive? Does it end up at an a:\> or c:\> prompt?

Interesting disk, have to check it out.

Here's a bit:

[MAX]
device=emm386.exe /v h=128 noems notr

[COMMON]
DEVICEHIGH=VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MADX

To get back to what DAVE's asking - are you booting from the floppy, or have you copied files to the hard drive?

The reason I suspected that his floppy was looking for those files on the hard drive was because his MADBOOT floppy was probably working with his system.

Sure - the MADBOOT disk seems a bit overkill (but interesting), and the posted info could be clearer. It seems like the errors come from a floppy boot, but sometimes folks will copy autoexec & config to the hard drive, which can create path problems.

I'm still not sure exactly what you did but just do it this way:

Boot with the bootdisk. Choose cdrom support if that's an option with the maddisk. Then at the a:\> prompt type:

format c:

and enter. When it's done and back at the a:\> prompt (and with the 98 cd in the cdrom) type:

E:\setup

and enter, where E: is your cdrom drive letter. It may be different depending on your bootdisk and your drive configuration. Usually the cdrom drive letter will be identified on the screen just before it gets to the a:\> prompt.

If that doesn't start the installation process, post back exactly what error messages you're getting.

let me explain this again and exactly what it does since when i put the MADBOOT in. first i put the MADBOOT in the floppy drive let it load then i choose boot with emm386 (max memory) then it goes through all this stuff your know checking for things the frist thing it checks is the CONFIG.exe file i guess then comes up with a message that says the fllowing file is missing or corrupted: EMM386.exe there is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 34 then it goes throgh the rest of the check now when i am in MADBOOT i use OS 95 download the files from the disc to the hardrive then install but at that point it has to run an scan but it cant and then it comes up with the following message

there is not enough free conventional memory to check a drive

you may need to remark (REM) some device drivers from your CONFIG.SYS file or, in your CONFIG.SYS, you may need to load the EMM386.exe driver to load other device drivers into upper memory blocks using DEVICEHIGH=statements.

then i click ok then it goes back to a black screen with MADBOTT I:\> then i am really confused because like i tryed it before and the OS went on but it kept talking about that file like i said i really am confused i never worked with a computer like this before can someone give me step by step directions on what to do because i dont know all this computer stuff i know very little thank you once again

I'm going to email you a bootdisk file. It'll be zipped so extract it with something like winzip. Then run (click on) the extracted file and it will create a bootdisk. Don't just copy the extracted file to a floppy disk as the file itself is not bootable.

Then throw that maddisk in the trash and boot with the one I sent and do the installation as I explained in #8 above.

It'll be a 98 bootdisk but should work OK to install your 95. Be sure to reformat your drive to get rid of whatever stuff you copied to it.

Your MADBOOT disk does sound like it has errors - it is quite a neat interface though.

Creates a RAMdrive I: and unpacks its goodies there.

At the a:\> prompt and with the installation cd in the cdrom type:

d:\setup

and enter, where d: is your cdrom drive letter. If you're using the bootdisk I sent and have only one hard drive then d: will be your cdrom.

After you formatted the drive, you typed the d:\setup (with the OS installation disk in the cdrom) and hit enter. At that point windows should have started installing. If that's not what happened, what did? What messages came up on the screen?

That could be due to several things:

KB87239

The config.sys file settings listed there wouldn't apply in your case since you're doing an installation.

One of the reasons it gives is bad RAM. I notice you list 160 meg as the amount of RAM on the computer. You may want to remove or swap out some of the memory in case some of it is bad. That could also be why the Mad disk was giving those errors as some of the memory management files won't load if they detect bad memory.

I assume you're installing 95. I don't think the fact that you're using a 98 bootdisk makes any difference but I thought I'd put together a 95 bootdisk and send it to you but I need to know what 95 version you have.

Assuming you're using an OEM cd, beneath where it says 'for distribution only with a new PC. . . ' will be the copyright and part number information. For example, one of my 95 disks says '0197 Part No. 000-59944'. It is the 0197 that tells what version you have. Post back the number on your cd.

In the meantime I'm going to send you another 98 bootdisk that will load less files and perhaps not give the error message.

i cant give you the number because the disc is not the organial copy plus i got this from my neigbor so i dont know if he still has the organial copy i will check with him and report back to you if you really need it. i will also try to switch memory around and try the bootdisk again to see if thats the problem because it might be damanged like you said and the OS i have is verison 95b if you really need that number just tell me

I'm glad you got it going. The 112 meg of memory is probably OK, especially for 95. Windows 95/98 usually doesn't do all that well with large amounts of RAM.
