Whenever I try to send Email I get the Error Message: 0X800C013E. It means nothing to me nor to the usually helpful people at my ISP. What does it mean?

I went back and restored the Windows drive and the Programs drive from Image files. The Error 'survived'.

I have two ISPs. Sending mail from either gives the same error message.

For a while I had Mozilla installed (but removed it in case it was the problem). Mozilla worked OK.

Anyone help?

Is there more to the error message that you didn't include?
Which program made the image files?

Are you using Norton Antivirus? If so, disable
scan outgoing email and see if it will go. Post back if this helps.

jerry,
Full message reads "An unknown error has occurred. Protocol: SMTP, Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800C013E".
Image was made with Norton's Ghost

mnymkr,
I use AVG and (ZoneAlarm firewall). Disabling scan outgoing mail made no difference. Nor did turning off AVG and ZA.

Hi TerryM,

That error can be caused by a damaged SentItems.dbx file.

First if there is any files in the Sent Items folder that you would like to keep move them to another folder in Outlook Express first.

Shutdown Outlook Express and go to the following location:

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

The X's will have different letters and numbers for each computer/identity.

Look for the file SentItem.dbx

Right click on the file and select Rename.

Rename it to SentItem.old

Click OK and Restart Outlook Express.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Not exactly the answer, Mesich, but it put on the track. I had an old set of OE files in a temp folder. Basically a blank set. swapping them over did the trick.

Now the problem is how to get those messages back into OE. I don't think you can export them from one into another? Is there a way?

Terry,
When you say you had an "old set" - I assume you mean an old set of DBX files?

If so, reverse what you did and try to follow what Mesich said. If that doesn't work, kindly detail exactly what happens when you try it. Note the part about moving messages out of the sent items folder before renaming. If you left messages in there, rename the DBX file back to Sent Items.dbx, they should show up in OE.

There is no need to move any DBX files directly into OE - once you delete them, or rename them, OE will automatically rebuild new ones.

You do not need to replace any of the folders. I added renaming the current SentItems.dbx to .old which is over kill unless you forgot move the items from there you wish to keep.

As Sekirt stated, you do not need to replace any of them with old ones.

Move the items in the current Sent Items folder you wish to keep and rename SentItems.dbx to .old.

Restart Outlook Express and a new Sent Items folder will be created.

Mesich

What I meant was that I did what Mesich said and it didn't work. But when I replaced them with an old set (yes, of DBX files) that I had previously placed in a backup folder just in case, that enabled me send a test file to myself.

So now I have the options of all my received files, but not being able to send;
or being able to send and receive but losing all the past correspondence.

Is there an alternative?

BTW in a fit of overkill I put everything into a temp folder, closed, deleted everything else (Sent Items, Drafts ...) with Windows Explorer. No joy there either.

Hi TerryM,

Is the saved received messages in one of the default folders such as Inbox or in a new folder you created?

Sorry you guys, nothing worked. Thanks for the help, though.

In the end I found that I could empty the default folder, then drag all the 'extra' DBX files into it. I got almost everything back again. The tree structure was lost - as you would expect, but that was easily fixed by dragging them round within OE.

I have never got Extractdbx files to work properly. This time was no exception.
