Please excuse me doing a quick hijack job on your post.Sekirt
Is that general or only in the case of AVAST?
I use AVG and it scans OE. It often finds viral attachments (which I used to just bin in the old days).DerekW

Hi Derek
In general. I believe Tom Koch has something at his site. Although I can't point you to an exact spot to look at.http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/
Many of the other MVPs have also made the same recommendation. Here is the one I quote most often.
This from Steve Cochran...
Antivirus software invades the Outlook Express program to try and intercept (incoming and, in some cases, outgoing) messages that might contain virus. The problem with this approach is that the antivirus software can trigger the destruction of an entire message folder or the entire message store, when it attempts to remove a message containing a potential virus.
To prevent the possibility of such destruction occuring, turn off email scanning in your antivirus software. You will still be protected against infection. If you attempt to open a message attachment containing a potential virus, then your antivirus software will recognize that your are attempting to infect your system, and will block you from doing so. The best practice on the user's part is to save an attachment to disk and then scan it with the antivirus software prior to opening it. Messages opened themselves (if you have the latest security updates from Windows Update)will not infect your system -- only attachments.
You do not need additional email scanning on top of your system being continuosly scanned by antivirus software, so turn off email scanning to prevent destruction of your message store.

Hi Sekirt, Derek
Hi all
Thanks for the help
Derek is right We do get infected mails, which may seriously harm our systems or may even cause our system to hang or restart again & againI must tell you earlier I didn't use the email protection service of avast.
Once OE Downloaded a mail 6MB Approx from the rediffmail server
When the file was downloaded it didn't let me open the mail nor it let me to scroll down to other messages, OE was totally hanged at that mail only It cannot download other messages nor I can see other messages.
For that message I went to my mail Id
& to my surprise there was no such mail of 6MB Size, just from where did that came, I Don't knowBut the result was that I had to delete my inbox.dbx file & then it ran smoothly
From that day I configured email protection & is catching infections every day
Though you are absolutely right that OE does n't lewts us open the attachments unless we disturb the settings still one should always choose the safe side

There are normally size limits as to how big an email can be sent. Many people have problems, such as you describe, when emails reach megabyte sizes.
People that send viruses/trojans/worms are interested in keeping the size as tiny as possible. I don't believe your 6MB email was a virus.
Although OE might be running smoothly, many people have lost emails suddenly. And many times DBXtract or a program like it, will not recover them. It is, of course your choice if you choose to continue scanning emails.
Another bad offense is using any of the default folders for long time storage of large amounts of emails(Inbox/Outbox/Sent Items/Deleted Items/Draft). OE is known for emails disappearing particularly from the Inbox. Custom folders should be used.
Manual maintenance should be done on a regular basis. Only when you are OFFLINE. Or if you click File and choose Work offline.
Click File->Folder. Then choose Compact All Folders. This will optimize the DBX files. Optimizing takes out all the wasted space.
Do not check Compact messages in the background. This can lead to lost emails.

Naman, If you decide to stay with advast you may want to get familiar with the forum.
Go here:

Thx for additional info. I started scanning emails when AVG7 introduced the facility. There were all sorts of problems (AVG) at the outset which I eventually ironed out. I posted something about this way back (how to fix etc).
I have to say that (so far) nothing has gone missing although I suppose there is still time. The biggest annoyance is the time AVG fiddles about checking all the spam I get, most of which my DIY filter then bins.
I could easily be convinced into switching email checking off, if only to speed things up. I never had any trouble spotting viruses in the AVG6 days and as you said the virus checker should pick them up if you are foolish enough to open them.
I've never tried AVAST so can't comment, although I nearly shifted over to it when grappling with AVG7's tiresome email problems in its early days.

Derek
I have never had any major problems with OE. Maybe just lucky? So I can't offer any first hand experiences.
But from the many posts I have seen where emails "disappeared" - it was sudden. Something like, "I closed OE and opened it the next day and all my emails were gone." Of course some were because of the computer crashing or electric going out as well.
I think for years now, Tom Koch's site has been the premier site for OE. If he and other MVPs say do or don't do something, I tend to listen. I follow the advice I gave above.
Besides your mentioning AVG 7 problems, I have seen others post problems as well. But I think that was back when it first came out.
None lately, that I can recall.sekirt

Sure thing sekirt. Link was interesting, much of the email rules stuff is in line with what I do.
DerekW

Thanks to All
Sekirt, Derek, Clors & allI think its theright thing to let the OE to work its way without the scanning
All I wanted was to be on the safe side, which I think I am since I became the member of the forum & having good friends like you all with expert advice.Decided no more scanning & give tensions to my Father as I go for my job & he is all alone at home struggling with Scanning & huge passwords I must do things to make the surfing easier for him rather than complicate things
Thanks for the advice
I know whatever adviceI will get from here will be the best. Thanks again,
Best Regards

If it makes you feel any better then I've just switched off my email scanning on the basis of sekirts info. It seems to make good sense.
DerekW

Hello everyone
Hope it continues to work without problems for all concerned.
Keep the basic rule in mind, of not opening attachments from strangers and you should be OK.
Many times on an email with a virus/trojan I peek inside and see just how the virus is going to activate. So, by highlighting the email, right clicking and choosing Properties->Details Tab->Message source. Maximize. I can see the PIF or whatever they use for the trigger. And it satisfies my curiosity without any danger of running it. Quite a handy feature for OE.
sekirt

I do that too, but mostly its just a page of gibberish. I'm longing for a .bat file because there is just a vague possibility of me understanding it, but they don't seem to use them these days.
Sekirt, I guess you and I are just plain nosey LOL.
PS. I tried all the tricks I could lay my hands on to make Message Source open maximised but gave up. Have you done any better?
DerekW

Derek
Nosey (grin)
Normally whatever triggers the virus/trojan will be encoded. Because emails have to use text to travel. Just like, if you attach a picture - it has to be converted to text. So, yes, there are things that will not make sense. But I get a general feel for what the email is about and if opened in the normal fashion, how it will do its damage.
One to look for is what appears as a picture attachment. But is not.Say that the attachment on the outside of the email says moon.gif. When you look inside, it will say something like moon.gif -and then way over to the right, so far over that you must scroll to find it- it will have the real extension like .pif. In other words it shows 2 "extentions" - 1 misleading and then the real one.
I had a virus come in that actually had a statement of assurance saying it was scanned for viruses. And even had a link to the Grisoft AVG web site.....THAT was to encourage people to open it. Have no idea what the payload did, but it was in there!
You can't maximize the source? Don't know, never saw that problem. When I click message source a window pops up. Then I just click the maximize, upper right corner button.
There is a keyboard method, to accomplish the same thing as right clicking Properties. I'll see if I can dig it up.
sekirt

Hello Naman, You're welcome. I used avast for a short time w/out any problems in OE. Good luck to you and your dad.
Derek and sekirt, I double click the title bar to maximize don't know if that will work for you? You can copy and paste the contents into notepad or a new message and enlarge.

Sekirt
Yep I've seen those spread extensions.Because I'm on the spammers data base I get every possible trick tried on me. I often use the spammers tricks as a means to filter out their emails (kinda using it back on them).
About anything that "appears" to have a double extension just has to be a nasty. What surprises me is how many folk are not set to show all extensions (and hidden files too). I blame it on MS default.
colors
Yes, title bar maxmises fine (among other methods). What I am looking for is a means to "keep it maxmimsed", so that it comes back up that way when I use it next time. It's that which has foxed me - even registry tweaks don't last. Seems like it's impossible.DerekW

Well folks, I've just stumbled across this:
I wasn't looking for a third party program in case it gets in my hair but I'm tempted to give it a whirl just out of interest. I have that sneaky feeling it won't keep Message Source maxmised unless it checks so often that it hogs resources.
Somehow I missed this when I last Googled on the subject.
DerekW

For anyone following this WinSize chatter the program does work and fixes Message Source size. The following are my notes when trying it on W98SE:
Program does not produce any start menu shortcuts (despite being stated in the write up).
You must have it running all the time for it to work, so I put shortcut to .exe file in StartUp. If at some later time you peer into Windowhandler screen you must NOT exit using the corner X otherwise programs stops. Use Close Dialog button.
When tagging a Window include any intermediate Windows.
It doesn't work on Maxmimised Windows, you have to pull them out from Minimised using the mouse.
I set auto apply to 500 Millisecond intervals.
Seems to fix some Window sizes without them being tagged for fixing.
Ignore WSConvert.exe file unless you already have a previous version on board.
I doubt all this is worth it to save just one mouse click but it might be handy to tame some of my other Windows movements. It mentions icon sizes but I haven't checked to see if it keeps these fixed.

quote: I double click the title bar to maximizeGood idea. I always have to remind myself of that. I keep trying to hit that tiny box, upper corner!
sekirt

Checked further and it fixes any view you select (large icons, small icons, list, details). It also keeps sort order.
Doesn't have any noticeable effect on performance, although resources drop by 3% when using 500 milliseconds refresh.

Re: My #18
This bit "When tagging a Window include any intermediate Windows"
Seems I got this TOTALLY wrong. Replace with:
"When tagging a Window DO NOT include any intermediate Windows"Not only is it unecessary but in the case of Message Source it started fixing the size of OE messages (too small) when you opened them.
Sorry folks, not sure how I screwed this up. It's fine with that change.
