I'm sure that emachines are like Compaq and many other packaged computers on the market. Typically, they will give you a quick restore CD that will have all of the software on it that came pre-installed on your machine from the factory. booting up to the CD will reformat your HD and restore it to the same state as when you got it new. So, yes it does have a ful version of Windows but you usually can't do just a native install of it. Don't bother calling the vendor and asking for an OS CD, they won't give you one and no you can't legally download win9.x.

What I mean is a clean install of 98 without all the fluff added from the PC manufacturer.

Emachines have all the windows files except for setup.exe and possibly a few others in the windows/options/cabs directory. If you can find anyone with a cd, you can copy the missing files to your hard drive.

It exists in cab files which takes the emachine to decompress. I think you could use it on another computer if you were an MIT student or a wiz. It was not meant to be used on another computer and they have done their best to keep what you would like to do from happening.

it is possible to do what to do. What u need to do is to open up a file called cabs.img using winzip which is on the disk. All u need to do is to extract those files ro your hard disk.

If you want to feel bad, check this. I bought two 366c machines and they are totally unusable. No wonder they blew em out on ubid. Thank goodness I only paid $249 &$269 which was about $300 too much each.

Okay, Kiddies! No one seems to have answered the original question from over a year ago. You all just want to post your bitches about how terrible eMachines is. I suggest that, if you want to bitch, you go to emachinessucks.com.

CJ, if you are still listening, I have the solution you were looking for. My roommate, AcydByrn, and I have figured out how to do a fresh (non-proprietary) install of Win98 onto ANY computer from the files on the eMachines restore CD.

If anyone (that doesn't bitch too much about something they are unwilling to take any action to rectify) would like more information about this, you have my permission to contact me, off post, to request info.

And remember, kiddies, hacking is not a crime...it's a survival trait!
