I just can't figure this out...whenever I start up my machine, I get the message (on black screen before password screen) which says: Unrecongnized command line 1 config.sys file. And then a couple of lines down: Too many parameters.

I have done quite a bit of research on this and can not find any answers.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,
You don't even mention why you wants to edit config.sys which is a very sensible file of window's system generally we don't touch....

Say what?

By and large unnecessary for Windows, config.sys can be examined, edited or even disabled with msconfig.

You can also open the file with notepad - if you like, copy & paste here for examination. The other error messages may be coming from autoexec.bat - the other DOS startup file.

Am I joking? Not one bit - although I strongly suspect you are. That, or you're just clueless regarding the function of config.sys in a Windows environment.

I do indeed 'suggest to modificate' config.sys, or dispense with it entirely, since it appears to be generating errors.

The original post says that windows has a problem with the confg.sys file. How pray tell do you propose to fix this without looking at that file.

I think that asking for expert advice before making modifications is the absolute best course of action to be taken.

Jboy, no choker chain on this one!

Well, if the thing will boot on up to Whendows, use msconfig to "look" at config sys.

Or, go into the root (C:\) and make sure the foler view is set to "show all files", then find "config.sys" if there is one, and right click, set the properties so you can modify it. Then, you can open the file in notepad and see what it says.

Just open notepad, open Whenox Exploder, find "config.sys" and drag from the icon with your mouse over to notepad. Copy and past the contents here so we can see.

I'd give you an example, but right now I'm on my X tra P utrid machine, and it doesn't have one--a config.sys that is.

While you're at it, post the contents of autoexec.bat

This is exactly why people shouldn't smoke crack.

"config.sys which is a very sensible file of window's system generally we don't touch"

No it's not. 99.9% of the entries in the config.sys file are for old legacy devices running in DOS.

"he gots already the problem"

I opened the config.sys file with notepad and this is what I got:

L À F àOÐ ê:i¢Ø +00

This is the same thing I get when I look at it from my System Configuration Utility.

Here is the autoexec.bat:

@ECHO OFF

PATH=%PATH%;"c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\"
SET PATH=C:\Perl\bin\;%PATH%

Thanks in advance!

Type "sysedit" in the run line to edit config.sys.

Heh - there's nothing really there to edit, the file appears to be corrupt. Delete, rename or else disable with msconfig. Possibly there's an older version in the root of C:\ (config.*) if you wish to try restoring one of those.

The autoexec seems ok

Both your config.sys and autoexec.bat files are corrupted. Delete them both.
Windows should recreate empty files. You might have to reinstall any programs that have put entries in either of those files, but it's very unlikely.

Jboy is might be correct, autoexec.bat could be ok. But I would suggest deleting both.

By 'ok' I mean it's not corrupt, and contains legal DOS statements. The path info might be needed by whatever set it up in the first place (or maybe not).

The config.sys file is junk and is accomplishing nothing other than generating error messages - the autoexec.bat can be disabled in msconfig if desired - preferable to deleting, as that can be easily reversed.

Please don't be so silly.

Just one small point. Some virus checkers put a line in autoexec.bat which is there to do a DOS AV scan. In which case that line does need to stay. Everything else is of no consequence unless you run DOS programs (games or whatever).

I think the problem with autoexec.bat was the use of long folder names in the path statement.

If your applications run OK with autoexec.bat disabled then leave it that way. Otherwise you may need to re-enable it and correctly edit the path line.

I'm glad that everything is back on track despite an obvious attempt to derail useful help. I would have been more active if work didn't get in the way.

I'm curious about the contents of the autoexec.bat file. This looks like something a programmer would have. Unless your computer is used by a programmer, it might be worth remming out those path statements (put 'rem' in front of the line). These statements could be a requirement of a not so nice program.

Well, it's been disabled anyways, but definitely not your run-of-the-mill path statement. I've never seen quotes used there before & I don't think long names can be fudged into the path that way
