OS: Windows 98
CPU/Ram: AMD Athlong XP 1800+, 256
Comment:

I just bought the ECS K7S5A motherboard, hooked up all my hardware and it won't boot. The fans and lights go on, but nothing shows up on the monitor, and there are no beeps.

Specs:
Processor: Athlon XP 1800+
Ram: 256 pc133 SDRam
Video Card: 32 Meg TNT2
Hard Drive: 2 4gig scsi hard drives from a Compaq Prosignia server (they don't start spinning but the lights come on)
Cdrom: LiteOn CDR

I can't find a floppy drive, maybe that could have something to do with it. Also a few screws don't have washers on them, and there is a small scratch on the bottom left side of the board.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well if the coating where the screws are is still intact I wouldnt worry, If the scratch is deep enough to break an etch then the board is junk unless you know how to run a eco wire(jumper between the etches), the monitor could be bad, memory or cpu not installed correctly could cause no boot. Try re-installing. Try unplugging everything one at a time and restarting each time untill you get a boot. The board maybe defective.

I've read that this MOBO may require more in the neighborhood of 350 or 400 watts.

Also, try unplugging all drives from the motherboard and try booting with just motherboard, RAM, video card. If that doesn't work, it has to be one or more of those 3 things failing. Swap the RAM and video card with a spare and see if it comes to life.

Also, double-check any jumper settings on the motherboard to make sure they make sense. If I remember correctly, there's only a couple jumpers on the K7S5A so this might not help much.

I have a K7S5A with an Athlon 900, the same RAM as you and a Radeon 8500. When I installed the Radeon 8500 (replacing a Voodoo3), the bobo power supply I had immediately started causing problems (system would shut off for 1 minute and then reset all by itself for no reason). I replace the PS with a decent 400W power supply... end of problems.

Please drop me an email ed@udel.edu and let me know how it works out... Thanks!
