I can no longer enter ebay from my computer. When I click "sign in" button I get an IEXPORE error window telling me I have performed an illegal operation and will be shut down, it then closes internet exporer on the ebay site. Also I can not get into my email account through outlook express. I can get into any other web site I try and the computer seems to be running ok, although it "flashes" when moving the mouse over some of the website pages. Can anyone suggest what I do, or can anyone help me restore factory settings.
Thanks,

Don.

Hi,
You need to do scanreg/restore from pure dos mode.Try tapping the F8 key while the computer is booting. You should come up with a menu, choose comand prompt only.At the C:\ type scanreg/restore and then hit enter.

Hi,

I've tried this, took the settings back to may 2003, rebooted the comp and bingo, its still the same. Thanks for all your help, but I think its a new computer for me.

Sounds like you are looking for an excuse to buy a new computer. :-)

The problem can surely be fixed with a little patience. A format and reinstall would almost surely do it, but there could be an easier fix.

Nope, I'd much rather format and reinstall, it would save me around £600. The problem is I can't find anything in the instuction manuals or on the web telling me how to format the hard drive, or what I need to reinstall

If you have a Dell, IBM, etc ... You should have a `Recovery' CD that will restore the system to the way it left the factory.

If you have a `generic' system, you will need the win98 install CD. If you format and install, you might have to round up drivers for some of your devices.

To format, boot from a win98 Startup floppy and type:
format C:
But I would only do that as a last resort.

You can do a reinstall `on top' by just inserting your win98 install CD in the drive and running the `setup' file that is on it. That sometimes works to fix problems and doesn't disturb your data.

But first I would go to the Add Remove Programs window, select MS Internet Explorer and click Add/Remove. Then select the `Repair' option.

And check back for tips from others.

Hi Walt,

Thanks for the advice, that got my email working. I still get the error message on ebay though, I was wondering if its something to do with cookies?
