When I go to start>run>dxdiag
I get this error:
Cannot find the file 'dxdiag' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.
How can I restore the dxdiag feature? I want to view this system information. Is dxdiag used in Win98 1st edition?

Restore? Was it working on this installation previously?
If you didn't update your DirectX beyond the version supplied with the CD, that may be the reason - I don't think dxdiag was in early versions of DirectX

Normally the file resides in c:\windows\system - at any rate:
version 9.0c here
earlier incarnations here

What's the specs on the system you're having the problem with? DirectX wouldn't install on some older systems with cyrix cpus.

I have a Win98 1st edition. 64mb video card. I am not sure about what directX version Is ther e a way that I can check what version of direct X I have? The PC is going on 7 years old. Everything is origional. Is dxdiag supposed to work for me?

It for sure won't work if the file isn't present.
If you haven't updated it from the original CD version, that is recommended (in general) - barring any hardware specific issues such as what DAVE has mentioned

Well, I hope you're not on dial-up (that would take a bit more than a minute)

There was a microsoft KB article, 289106, that explained the problem with cyrix processors and directx but it's no longer on their site and I couldn't find the text of it anywhere. But apparently with at least some of the 5x86 and 6x86 processors, windows sees them as 486s and won't install directx.
On an initial windows installation you won't get any message--directX just doesn't install. If later on you try installing it you'll get an 'unsupported processor' message.

That'd be disconcerting
Checking the Win98 CABs failed to reveal the presence of dxdiag.exe - I do recall the diagnostic tool not being in early DirectX versions (can't remember what shipped with 98)
As far as checking the DX version, Everest shows that (under the OS 'Components' section)
