DVD/CD see music CDs but not CD-ROMs

My DVD/CD drive can see music CDs and Film DVDs without a problem. The probelm is that it says 'drive not ready' when I try to read a CD-ROM. When I put the CD-ROM in the LED on the drive starts blinking for a minute or so after that it just stays on constantly. What can I do?
