DVD Drive Not Working?

CPU/Ram: Pentium III; Pulsar 500,2

I have a samsung dvd-rom sd-606f i tried playing my dvd's on this and its not working? Normal CD-Rom or Music CD's work but when i put a DVD in it just makes a funny noise as if its struggling. Then nothing happens no DVD pays its just freezes my computer until i eject the disk?

You have to have DVD playing software installed...if it's not installed, DVDs will not play. If it's a new DVD-ROM drive, you should have gotten a CD...probably Cyberlink PowerDVD or Intervideo WinDVD. You can't view a DVD without a program

I have Power DVD but its still not working. I reformated my computer around 6 months ago have not really tested the DVD until now. It just seems to be jumpy making alot of noise then it freezes my computer until i eject it.

are you using a hardware decoder (internal PCI card), if so are the drivers installed for it and is it showing up in the device manager.

If you are using a software decoder it could account for your slow performance. DVDs require a lot of system resources and processor time due to the high quality of the video and audio.

If you are using software decoding i recomend buying a hardware decoder. They are pretty cheap, can probably buy one for about £30.00.

Where can i check for the PCI card? I have not got the manual for my computer.

I think i have one but i may need to reinstall the drivers. Any idea where i can these from?
