Comment:

I am one of those unlucky enough to have got Dust.exe through Kazaa.
I have searched the internet (using Google) and this is the only forum that I have seen any reference to it.

I have read through the other posts and crossed over into the other operating systems. I have tried to do as others have suggested but I just cant seem to find it within my registery anywhere at all !!
But each time I reboot I am getting the popup window saying cannot find Dust.exe or one of its associated programs.

Is there anywhere in the Registry I can look ? There is no other reference to dust or similar within my registery at all. So it looks like it is something else. Is there a startup registery I can look at ? or delete or something more drastic :)

cheers

hi there- managed to solve it- It had inserted itself into the system.ini file within the explorer.exe line.

explorer.exe dust.exe

thats why whenever I started up it couldnt find it- as all other aspects of it was already out of my computer.

Click Start > Run > type win.ini and click OK.

Look at the load= and run= lines. Edit out any reference to Dust.exe.
Close the win.ini and save the changes.

**The load and run lines should read:

load=
run=

Glad to see you fixed it and thx for sharing it with us. Both system.ini and win.ini are favorite places where old virus references get stuck after all other traces have been removed. This is why scanreg /restore sometimes works (these two files get restored along with the two registry files).

May be worth starting your own fresh post on this one, ideally in the Security & Virus forum.

Have you typed system.ini in the Run box to see if dust.exe has left a spurious entry there? Also try the same with win.ini

Also have you downloaded and Run "Ad-Aware" or "SpyBot Search & Destroy" (malware finders/fixers)? Often virus checkers don't find these sort of things.

Typing dust.exe in Google may unearth this topic being discussed by others.

XPPro in the folowing key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
the "Shell" value should be changed from "explorer.exe dust.exe" back to "explorer.exe".
Found 11,120 KB app Dust.exe in the c:\windows,c:\windows\temp and c:\windows\system32, and c:\windows\prefetch had DUST.EXE-2B66B177.pf (64KB) and DUST.EXE-373C304C.pf (44 KB). I moved them to the recycle bin for now. My c:\windows\win.ini and c:\windows\system.ini were ~~snicker~~ "clear of dust".

I would post your problem (with all the details) in the Security & Virus forum. You will get the best advice there and this link will eventually die - if not deaf already.

Just go to the forum and fill in the details at the bottom of the white page that has all the postings on it. That way it will be just "your" post. Note it's number so you can look back. You can add anything more later (as if you were responding).
