Check out message 53614 on the Windows 2000 section of this forum. Seems some people have been seeing this in 2000 and XP as well.

Thank you Phil and Tufenuf, but i have read before these messages...
I have uninstalled and deleted all files and directories of kazaa and i check the registers with regedit ("kazaa" and "dust")No, I think that I caught this virus, I don't understand...

Hi serge, Tufenuf, Phil, hi everyone,First of all, I'm glad to welcome a country-fellow! ;-)
Have a look at these links:
-> Dust.457
-> Mini 45
-> Dust SymantecDid you scan your system with Trend Micro online AV scan

Hi Gérard!

Hi serge, Tufenuf, Phil, hi everyone,Regarding Antiviruses, NAV is installed on my personal computer; at work, we have Sophos AntiVirus.
Causes to get an antivirus not to work properly are so numerous that when someone in my company has got a weird thing, I ask them to run a Trend Micro online scan!
In France, SecUser is a very good site viruswise (but their online scan is the Trend Micro one).
Never trust only ONE antivirus!
Some year ago, I changed all of the systems in my company from ViruScan to Norton because on one particular virus, Viruscan had not been good... just after the change, it was the opposite: Viruscan was better on the next virus!
So take care of antiviruses and also, add a prudent behavior!Have a good day,

Hi serge, Tufenuf, Phil, hi everyone,>I have just reboot my computer and i have
>again the same problem...
>"windows cannot find Dust.exe"
Often, there's an intermediate program ie a program is called by a RUN key in the registry and this program launches Dust.exe.You won't find dust.exe on the disk because Windows tells you it cannot find it!
Instead try to find the line in a system file that calls the culprit, some clues:
- delete any useless file (cookies, Temp, Temporary Internet Files) then empty the recycler bin then run a Registry cleaner such as JV16PT or RegSeeker
- reboot and if the issue is still there
- look at all of the locations used to start a program... you'll find a page on my site -> Programs at Startup... remember, you are looking for something that's unusual, not necessarily Dust.exe!
To know what's unusual, have a look at the links I give there -> StartUp ListsHave a good day,

The 3 dust.exe files i found on my pc were easy to del..but I also had a popup on windows re star "error can not find dust.exe"
go to the root of C:\ and edit autoexec.bat, you will find an entry in there called dust.exe. remove and save file. Next go to start, run. regedit.
Search for dust.exe. under shell you will see explorer.exe dust.exe (sneaky f---er). right click the entry and modify ....remove the dust.exe from the end of explorer and save. Reboot and all should be well.

I have also downloaded a file from Kazaa- normally I am careful about what I download- but this was camo'ed as something else. I have tried all the suggestions above and in other posts- and I am still getting this message at windows startup. "dust.exe or one of its associated programs not found"
I am using 98 incase this is any difference- but I cannot find any more references to dust within the registery. I am using a registery program to no avail. Any more suggestions would be very much appreciated :)

Hi serge, Tufenuf, Phil, cb-uk, John, hi everyone,cb-uk, thanks for your post! I hope it will help solve the problem!
John, consider cb-uk's post (REM a line in C:\Autoexec.bat). If it doesn't work, follow my suggestions in response #7 (checking plenty of system files able to launch a program at Windows start). Post back!

Hi serge, Tufenuf, Phil, cb-uk, John, hi everyone,You're welcome serge!
Thank you for your kind words!Have a good day,

I tried everything and finally solved the "can't find dust.exe" message at startup. Make sure you delete everything to do with "dust.exe" from the registry and from all other files. Remove any "application" files in Kazaa you've downloaded around the time the problem started. Then I (Windows Me) went <start> <msconfig> <system.ini>, then open the + sign next to "boot", find the line "shell=Explorer.exe Dust.exe", right click on this line and delete the "dust.exe" part only. The computer said I had to reboot and when I did the problem was gone.
I hope this helps! Take care...

Hi,
I've had the same problem with my windows XP proffesional version. I solved it by running AVG-virusscanner (www.grisoft.com (it's free)) and then deleting al dust.exe files and/or maps. then I did this:go to run, type in regedit. click on hkey_local_machine, click + sign next to it, scroll down list till you see software. click + sign again to expand the list. scroll down to microsoft and expand that also. scroll down list till you see windows nt, and expand that folder also, click the + sign by current version. and last scroll down list till you see winlogon and highlight that folder, don't click the + sign on this one. to the right there will be a list. scroll down that list and you should have an entry called shell. it should read explore.exe. if there is an entry behind it, it needs too be removed. to change the entry right click shell and choose modify. under value data type in explore.exe and then click okay. reboot your computer.
It helped me so maybe it will help you
Take care,
Marco Nuijens
