Comment:

ok i just bought a used Dell GX1 Midsize computer, with 128 MB Ram, and 350 MHz Pentium II..

and it didn't come with a modem, so i've been trying to install my old Internal ISA Zoom 56k Modem in it (that i had running fine on Windows 95a on my old Packard Bell)..my new Dell has two slots where it can be installed..i've tried both..anyways.. i just cannot get the damn computer to install it right!

i've been trying to change around the com port settings, irq settings, on the modem (with jumpers) and in the device manager thing..sometimes i can actually get it to install but then i go to make a new connection with Dial Up Network and DUN wants me to install a new modem..like it doesn't know i have a modem installed already, cuz when i do get it installed right i go to "more info" on the diagnostics tab..and it shows up all the info about the modem..then i tried giving it commands in DOS for the modem, and you can hear it turn on and off, and hear a dial tone..

but stupid DUN 1.3 won't let me make a new connection! i really need help..i'm tired of using my old slow packard hell!! haha..

also..(sorry this is so long)..before i install my modem in my computer..the only IRQ's that are free are 5 and 11..i've tried 5 and it won't work..it just caused conflicts and stuff..and my modem doesn't have any jumpers To set it to IRQ 11..

and before i install my modem..the only COM Ports that show up are 1 and 2 (which are the ports for my serial ports..)

anyways..i need serious help, quick!! i'd REALLY appreciate it!! i've tried everything it seems like!

Thanks
-Chad

I think I would suggest getting a PCI modem. They are very inexpensive. Then you won't be hassled with the IRQ problem.

1. In the Dell GX1 PC, are you using a Win98SE Driver for this unnamed 56K ISA Modem that was working in the "old PB with Win95?"

2. BEFORE you installed the ISA modem in this Dell GX1 did you see any Modem entries in the Device Manager or Modem Software in the Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs [I realize the Dell GX1 came to you without a modem physically inserted in its PCI/ISA/CNR slot]
3. If there was an entry in the Device Manager or modem software in Control Panel, was it uninstalled before the new ISA modem was Installed?

4. Did you disable any Serial Ports in the BIOS BEFORE installing the new ISA modem?

1. no i use the drivers that came with this crappy Zoom modem..then it seems to install right, but DUN doesn't recognize it, i tried DUN 1.4 too..it still doesn't work. Also i just tried installing Win 95 on my Dell and it installs fine, and DUN sees my modem, and connects fine..

2. no before i installed my modem there wasn't any kind of modems installed under device manager.

3. yeah i tried to disable the ports under Bios..still installs all screwed up..

anyways..so the PCI modems don't have any jumpers to screw around with!?
i'll probably just get a PCI modem then, i know they're really cheap anyways..so i'll screw around with this a little longer then just get a PCI modem if i can't get it..

thank you both for your help, i don't know what else to try with this stupid ISA modem
