If you're just hooking up to an existing phone line, chances are it's not going to work due to technology. If you're hooking up to a line that runs DSL, (and chances are it will be different line than you're old phone line) I'd look closer at your router.

Michael, check the lights on your modem and refer to your modem manual to determine whether the modem and/or DSL line is working. If everything is correct there the problem is within your computer.

I see Pierre is back with more useless information.

First of all you don't need a special phone line. That is the beauty of DSL in that it works with exsisting phone lines/technology.
Also a DSL modem is not a router, it is a MODEM (hence the name).

There are basicly 2 different ways to connect the modem to your computer. The first way is a DSL modem that is a PCI card that plugs directly into a PCI slot on your computer. The other way is the DSL modem connects to a Network card in your computer? Which one is yours?

Ok a few more questions.

1. Does it show up in device manager and if so does it show up as being installed correctly or does it have a yellow excamation in front of it?

2. Do you have any other USB devices on your computer and do they work correctly?

3. Do you have a DSL account with phone company/isp? If so, are all the lights on your modem lighting up?

4. Was this modem purchased at a computer (or similar) store or was it given to you by the company you are sign up with DSL?

5. What is the brand of the Modem?

If you live in an older building you might not be able to use DSL. I had this same problem and it turned out that the phone wiring in the building was too obsolete to carry DSL frequencies. Get cable if you can. It's better.

Normally the DSL installer will check your line and if it is a professional installation (versus self inatallation) they will verify that the DSL line is good and working. In any case the DSL line is usually routed to a single phone jack (which you specify).

Since you are using a USB ethernet connection (I assume), your point of failure could be the DSL line, the DSL modem, or the USB ethernet card. If the installer or you verified the line and modem, that would leave the USB ethernet adapter as the suspect. A USB ethernet adapter is a high power device, so try to connect it directly to the PC (without using a hub).

Terri,

Do YOU have a DSL line? I don't, but can you explain why the service will not be offered in my area UNTIL they lay down the new line, thus offering the technology that is currently NOT available through my existing phone line? Before this gets out of hand between the two of us, do some research before you regurgitate information you read out a magazine and see what's involved in the real world. DSL requires a router that hooks into your hard drive much like the setup of cable hookup. Simply plugging your phone line into a peripheral you slam into a PCI slot will not work like it's portrayed in magazines and textbooks all the time. Not everyone has phone lines that can carry the frequency of DSL. True, it theory you can enjoy "the beauty of using your phone line while talking with someone on the same line", BUT in the real world, it's simple not that simple all the time.

Useless information huh? Do you work for PC Magazine? Do some research before you claim someone else doesn't know what their talking about. I NEVER claimed I knew everything there is to know about DSL, but I know what I've experienced. That I'm confident about. BTW, did you also know it's impossible to fax via a DSL line Terri? Do you even know why?

Jees, pick on someone else that can't bring FACTS to the discussion!

You wrote 'it just cant detect a modem when I go to sign on'. If your modem is connected via an ethernet adaptor, you will not see a modem in your system configuration. Your PC will not detect the modem, only the ethernet adaptor.

To connect to the internat you will configure LAN settings, not dial-up modem settings. You will have to configure your network (from control panel) to set your ethernet adaptor to use TCP/IP. Then you will configure your internet options to use a 'LAN connection'.

Pierre, I appologize for my rudeness in my first post but it really bothers me to see people come in here and spout out information they know nothing about.

Yes I do have DSL.
Facts:
I live about 6500 feet from the Phone switch in a neighborhood that was built in 1956. Very old lines yet I come within about 20k-30k of my top speed of 764k. So yes you can use old crappy phone lines for DSL
My manager at work also has DSL and his modem is a peripheral that you plug into the PCI slot.

And no it is not impossible to fax with a DSL line. True you can't do it in the old sence of using a program like Winfax and dialing through the phone line but there are lots of web based fax sites out there that work just fine.

No I don't work for PC Magazine, instead I'm a senior computer technician. Yes I do know what I'm talking about in the real world. I write from experience, not from what I read in an article.

It has been brought to my attention that I posted here. I DID NOT.

First off I DON'T HAVE DSL. Second off, I think I know who may have wrote this post. My boss? Well they run 6 stores and only 2 have computers because they are in malls. We go through alot of legal pads, but no computers where I work, and they tell me to change the subject when I even bring it up. Third - what is a phone switch? And my home town is was not established the same year I was born, that gives me an idea of who was the poster of these falsifications. And last of all, my grammar is a little better than "crappy". Come on now. And I haven't posted under the name Terri for God knows how long. And this is the reason why. Too much ridicule coming back to bite me. And why did this Terri who posted not put her email address? Notice mine is listed. And one last thing. Do any of you ever remember me answering other questions on DSL? NO BECAUSE IT IS NOT MY FIELD AND I ADMIT I DON'T KNOW A DAMN THING ABOUT THEM. And last, I always leave a calling card of somekind. See the weblink and signature below.

So to Pierre, I have always looked up to you and think you are much more computer knowledged than I am. If someone ridiculed you using my name I do publicly appologize from me and say I feel sorry for someone that must hide behind my identity.

I DID NOT DO ANY OF THESE POSTS AND I HOPE THEY FIND THEMSELVES REMOVED IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

Besides Pierre, I appologize to anyone that felt offended by my phantom writer.
Terri

One more thing I forgot. This other Terri hasn't seen my posts as Terri in so long they forgot that when I end a post I sign off on it. Like this:
Terri

DID THEY? THINK NOT!!
But all is forgiven because they have to live with themselves and their identity crisis. I feel sorry for them.

Now does that tell you and the world who I am? I have been posting here for over a year and I have been the only Terri (with an i) to post in here, so naturaly when someone sees a post from Terri they will assume it is me. Maybe all that stuff you said is true for you, but not for me. So please Terri in the future can you attach some signifigance to your name so they know it is not me. As I said I don't post under that name any more because of this. But everyone does now know me by Tduck. And if you look at the URLs for my websites(3) you will see the kaduck name in it. Even if you posted your email address they would know from that it is not me. So please from one Terri To another Terri do something with your identity to make it your own.
Terri

Sorry to steal your name, I didn't realize someone else in here posted with that name. I don't like to give my e-mail address cause usually that's the best way to get spammed. I'll use my last name from now on. Sorry for the confusion.

I have no problems putting my email out, I think when Justin created the link to email, that was his way of making sure the poster is who they say they are. Besides, if I post misinformation, I retract. That way anyone who sees a post of mine is basing the info on my legitimacy and reputation in this forum. With that in mind, and after much research, my original post is still not entirely wrong and it still could be a router issue..amongst about 20+ other things. Terri B., if you truly believe I post "useless information" then feel free to call me on it. In this case, you were a bit overly agreesive with your remark simply because the info is not useless and very well could be the problem. DSL is such a new technology, there are LOTS of bugs to work out. Even the DSL providers don't have all the answers.
