I am trying to install windows, but I keep getting a error saying, not ready reading drive e. I have read of people fixing this problem when they already have a OS, but I don't as yet.
I type setup and it runs for a while, then I get the error.
So how do I install windows when I keep getting this?

I think the CD was D, but I reloaded to make sure, now it says no drive found. Hmmm? Guess I will have start over. Get back in a few minutes.

I was using D:\setup. I have heard that e is a phantom drive. My first time encountering it tho.

Hi Ronnie

How far into the install before you get the error message ?
Is it always at the same point ?

It might be that your Windows CD is scratched, dirty or damaged.
Try cleaning the CD, and have another go.

I lost drive d some hwere, so I am formatting again.
When I hit setup, it ran for about 1 minute then the error showed up.
OK, format just finished. Will retry and get back to you. Thanks

OK, it says tools loaded to drive d,
below that it says drive e =driver mscd001 unit 0

E: is your CDROM

At A:\ prompt, type E:
Then at E:\ prompt, type SETUP

Windows should start installing.

When you change to E: prompt, does that go okay ?
No error about "Invalid Drive Specification" ?

At E: prompt, type DIR
Do you get a whole bunch of files displayed on the screen, or still the "not reading drive E" error ?

Everything should work !
Did you clean the CD ?
Might be a tiny bit of dirt right where it is trying to read setup.exe !

If you are using a burned CD and not an original, could also be that the copy is not perfect, and there might be a copy fault at setup.exe causing the error.

One more thing you could try...
Setup.exe is also in the WIN98 folder
At E:\ prompt, type CD\win98
At E:\Win98 prompt, type SETUP

Sometimes a cdrom will take several seconds to spin up. If you try to run setup before it gets going you can get that message. Of course make sure the cd is clean as Krystyna suggests.

I've also found that opening the cdrom and cleaning the lens with windex or alcohol helps but that's not something you should try unless you know what you're doing.

I finally got windows to install and have got to the place where I accept the license agreement. But the mouse does not work for some reason. It is a usb mouse and there a 4 slots, none of which are lettered for a certain type item. I have tried it in all of them but still does not work.
Now that being said, is there something I can do to accept the agreement without using the mouse?
Thanks

The ALT, TAB, ENTER and arrow keys may work. Why not connect a regular PS/2 mouse while installing windows? Most likely the USB mouse isn't working because 98 doesn't have the correct drivers. You can install them after 98 is loaded.

Keys didn't work. It isn't made for ps/2, only usb. I tried to download a driver and load it to floppy on my PC, but it keeps saying something like can't format- wrong disk size or something like that.
Anything else I can try?

You probably have a serial port on the computer. You could temporarily use a serial mouse.

I don't know about the error message. As long as you've got a 1.44 drive and 1.44 disks you shouldn't have a problem. Is the file to large to fit on a single disk?

You should be able to use those keys to navigate to accept the conditions. TAB or ALT should highlight the correct box. Then hit ENTER. I've done it that way; I just can remember off-hand the exact sequence.

I have looked everywhere, I also have the cover off and no ps/2 port on it.
This is a aprire by acer.
I have tried the keys in different sequences, but haven't been able to make anything highlight.
I may have to find an old usb mouse that is supported by 98.

I'm not familiar with USB mouse support with 98 so I can't help with that.

A serial port is a trapazoid shaped connector like the video connector but it has nine pins instead of 15. I've never seen a PC without one so you must have one. If you can find a serial mouse for it you should be able to finish the installation.
