Dramatic slow down - msgsrv32 problem

We are experiencing dramatic slow down of Windows 95 and 98 on several portable models from Toshiba. Some times this seemes to be triggered approx. 30 seconds after Word is started. Usually (always?) msgsrv32 is not responding, and stopping it returns the system to normal speed. Does anyone have an explanation or a cure for this?
