Comment:

I have a strange problem. The drag and drop feature of Windows 95 has disappeared. I can no longer move icons on my desktop, I cannot drag and drop files from My Computer of Windows Explorer. I can copy files but cannot paste them to a new location. This started on 6/10, with one user reporting the problem. Since then I have had 5 more users report the problem. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

5 more users? Are you running win95 workstations on a network? If so, and the problem is spreading, this sounds suspiously like a virus at work - get your system(s) checked fast!!

UPDATE:

I am now up to 9 PC's that have reported the problem. The PC's are on a Novell Netware network, except 1 PC. Most of the PC's have NAV 5.0 with the latest definitions (6/7/99) installed.

ve just read that the problem may be due
to Microsoft Windows Explorer.
You could yry and install the latest version of IE that may solve the problem.

have exactly the same problem. it`s sureley no virus by me. had a systemcrash with win95, reinstalled it (didn`t format c:), and since this, i cannot drag`n`drop in explorer, cannot copy - but not paste. it`s the same in word and excel too. no copy and paste is possible. i also viewed to the clipboard-viewer when i copied or cutted something, and the clipboard-viewer didn`t show anything. so it seems that nothing is copied to the clipboard! maybe a virus? don`t know. i started the newest version of norton anti-virus (updated 1-april-2000), and NAV didn`t alarming. i have the problem since 1 week now, cannot copy my files, have tried all in the internet, but it seems, that nobody can help. i think the only way is to format c: and install all new.

I have the same problem, but when I try to (re)install IE5 or o2k, it complains
"Error 1904: Cannot register c:\windows\system\javale.dll
HRESULT -2147024865 Contact your support personel" whatever that means. Also complained about c:\windows\system\dispex.dll
so I copied it from cabs to no avail.
Please Help!

Drag and drop problem in Win95, may have started after installing then uninstalling Publisher 2000. Getting all kinds of wierd stuff.
1) when starting up, getting message that master boot has changed. Then after Norton AntiVirus 2000 does its thing, I get no viruses detected.
2) EI 5: when I go to print I get message "insufficient memory" but I just added 64 MB to the original 32. Also problem intermittently with pasting or using hot spot URLs
3) Outlook 5: Getting intermittent "insufficient memory" when I try to create a message. Also URL hotspots not linking me to web pages.
4) Word 97: getting message when I open up Word that the "document could not be registered. It will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document"-that's even before I open up a doc! Then I get the same message with a file name attached "c:\programiles\startup\ilookup.dot."
Then MS VisualBasic "runtime error 2147024888 Autmation error. Then when I click "help" I get
" cannot find c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\vba\VEenLR3.hlp file. Do you want to find this file yourself?"
Happens every time I open Word and references another file called

Me too, drag and drop broken. I'm almost certain that it was killed by a partial install of Office 2000 on my long-stable Win95 system.

If replacing the OLE dll files using dcom95/98 does not work, try replacing the user32.dll, since it contains the function call for icon dragging. If this STILL doesn't work, you are probably missing a registry key or two. Cut and paste this to a file called drag.reg and merge (double-click) it into the registry: (do not include the --header-- and --footer--.

--START FILE---
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{0000010e-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
@="IDataObject"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{0000010e-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\NumMethods]

DCOM 95 Fixed this exact problem on a machine we just spent the last 4 hours trying to fix.

It appeared to be a missing/corrupt DLL in the OLE side of things. It affected email (opening attachements), windows paste operations (no clipboard it appears) office etc...

remove the _nospam4me_ from the email address to reply

If you have installed Office then remove the FINDFAST shortcut from the STARTUP folder.
Right click Start
Left Click Open
Double Click Programs
Double Click Startup
Delete Findfast
Restart

I deleted all the office startup stuff from the startup folder and all if fine. Found something a while back on the Microsoft site about a bug in the FindFast code so I don't use it. I remove it from any computers that are brought to me and the machines seem to become more fluid in their tasks as well as the drag and drop feature starts working again.
Oh yeah, Reinstalling Windows will not help as it is a code error in the findfast program and not a driver error.

I had the same problem after installing IE5 and Visual Basic 6. Before installation, though, I did a RegClean to free up registry space. Perhaps this deleted the pertinent reg keys. Chris Radcliffe in response 13 has the answer (at least for me). Thanks, Chris.

I took the advise of No#13 above (Chris Radcliffe) and installed dcom98 1.3 from microsoft's website and it fixed all my problems.
1. Drag and drop desktop icons crashed my win98 pc.
2. Left click and hold, then move mouse, anywhere in internet explorer caused system wide crash.
Installed dcom98 all works perfectly! Thanks Chris!! I was ready to reinstall!!
