Thanks mesich, bryco and seawatch.
Bryco,
That was what I was looking for - Thanks again!I had a feeling an ISP cannot by nature offer better d/l speed than 'browsing speed' or vice versa. Actually I am arguing abt this with a lecturer of mine, hence I wanted to be sure myself.
1. I understand that a 50kb worth of data will be displayed to me by my brower slower than that 50kb is downloaded. But does a faster d/l mean a correspondingly faster browing ?
2. It is not possible for 'surfing speed' to be greater than d/l speed...right?
The gap between d/l and surfing speed depends on the web page itself (activex, images, sounds, etc) and the effeciency of the brower...right?
regards,
-Kailas Shastry.

Hi Kailas, Henry, hello everyone,
Comparing download speed and Browsing speed is like comparing apples and oranges".
I agree with Henry's statement.
Both downloading a file and browsing the internet is downloading.
Downloading a file will be much faster than a downloading a web page.
To answer your questions above, "does a faster d/l mean a correspondingly faster browing"?
If your download speed is faster then web pages will also open faster as it is part of downloading.
"It is not possible for 'surfing speed' to be greater than d/l speed...right"?
No
"The gap between d/l and surfing speed depends on the web page itself (activex, images, sounds, etc) and the effeciency of the brower...right"?
Right
Good Day!
Mesich

Thankyou for the wonderful advice henry. It takes a true genius to say that.
Please take a look at bryco 's post on the other thread ie,
http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/147708.html
you will realise that the analogy is not of oranges and apples, but of one kind of apple vs. another kind of apple.
OR one kind of orange vs. another kind of orange.bryco - thanks again to make sense of what I had posted and to reply convincingly. I guess I could have worded it better !
Regards,
-Kailas.

Hi mesich and henry,
Thanks for confirming my ideas there, except that I take exception to the analogy drawn to apples and oranges !
:)

Analogy...
I am driving from Boston to Portland, Maine. If I use route I95 on a Tuesday morning at 11am then I am going to arrive in Portland in about an hour.
If I take old route 1 with it's many stop signs and scenery then it is going to take me about 2 hours.
Even though she reads at a rate of 200 words per minute, my wife, riding with me, will be able to read more pages of her book if I take the highway.
Highway = Downloading
Back roads = Surfing(Maybe I could have come up with a better one)
Bryan

Hi Kailas, henry, Mesich, Bryan, hi everyone,Very good explanations above!
>The gap between d/l and surfing speed
>depends on the web page itself (activex,
>images, sounds, etc) and the effeciency of
>the brower...right?
Right...
... but off the subject! though I would like to point out that in the "etc.", there's poor coding of web pages! in addition to the weight of the code plus the weight of pictures, describing pictures in % or oodles of items in %, the browser will have to calculate the size of elements before arranging them on the screen!
Several coding ways oblige browser to spend time working out its parameters!HTH
Have a good day,
Gérard from Paris, France
