I have a downloaded program files folder which is a subfolder in the Windows folder in the C drive. Previously the folder has no files but recently when I click the folder, it has three files, one is Shockwave Flash, the other two are codec files. I don't remember downloading these files. My question is how did they get downloaded without my being aware of it. Can they be safely deleted?

The codec files are probably downloaded by Windows Media Player (or some other program) so that they can play various file extensions that it couldn't support before. And the shockwave flash download could be an automatic update, or something of the sort, if you claim it gave you no warning or anything that it was being downloaded.

I would say that yeah, they probably could be safely deleted... But, my guess is that they don't take up hardly any space at all, anyway. So might as well just leave them there....

In my same folder it contains only those things that I had wanted to download. For everyone that is there it is my desire to keep them there or else I fear those programs that are associated with will not work.
They are similar to your files.

The files in \Downloaded Program Files are ActiveX programs.
If you have been to the Windows update site, some of the entires (WUxxxx) are the ones required to interface between your PC and that site.
Shockwave entires are the programs that allow you to view the content of sites that contain Shockwave.
Under Tools > Internet Options > Advanced is an option called Install on Demand.
If this is selected, then these programs load automatically.
If you unselect it, you will get a window asking if you want to install the program.
I recommend it be UNselected, so that you get to control what is being installed.
(This is about the only sure way to stop CometCursor from installing itself)
