Comment:

I use Windows 98 with a DSL modem, and for the last couple of days I have been having trouble downloading files. The internet itself works fine. But now, for some reason, I can't download any files above 1 MB without a problem. The files download, but when I try to open them I get a message saying that the file is "corrupt." It doesn't matter what I download or the website, if it over 1 MB I get the "corrupt" file message when I try to open the file. I use Firefox and Opera as my internet browsers (I rarely use Internet Explorer). I have 16 GB of space on the hard drive and am only using about 3 GB right now. I have 256MB of RAM. I have run a virus scan with AVG free edition, and no viruses were found. However, I am not able to update or download a new version of AVG. I have tried to reset my modem to no effect. I have even tried to hook up the modem to a different computer, and the same thing happens. I have also, reinstall my operating system, also no good. I have deleted all my temp. files, still nothing. Another strange things is that if I download a file at work, and put it on a CD, and then put the CD into my computer at home, then the file will open without any problem. So any help you can give me would be appreciated. Like I said the modem has been working fine since I got it, last December, and all of a sudden a couple of days ago I can't open download files anymore.

What happens if you use a download manager?

Thanks for the reply.
Right now, I don't use a download manager. I just downloaded using either the opera or firefox browser. Never had any problems downloading using them, until a few days ago. So I don't know. I will give the downloader accelator a try though, and see what happens.

Maybe I'm not understanding this part properly:

"I have even tried to hook up the modem to a different computer, and the same thing happens".

This seems to point to the modem or its software. The only other things that would fit are a server problem or the line (assuming this other computer is using the same).

Well unfortuantly the download accelerator did not work. I thought it might be the modem too, and am waiting to hear back from tech support so I'll see what they say.

Tech support got back to me. They tested the modem on their side, and someone how they found out that it was a broken telephone line on my block. This after insisting that their was nothing wrong with their equipment for about a week. Geez. Anyway so it looks like it was nothing wrong with my computer, and as such I am closing this message.
