Hi there everyone,
I have a serious problem with trying to get my friends computer to boot up into windows.
I get the cannot find the command.com message at the c:prompt
I have tried heaps of solutions but no luck yet..
I have tried booting from a win 95 boot disk but it just goes to the a: prompt and i am not sure what to tyope in to copy the command.com file to the c drive
i have tried
xcopy and copy a:command.com c:\
but it comes back invalid parameterswhen i try to star from safe mode
i get the windows 95 window and then
vfat error system halted.i have searched the internet a little for some answers and to no avail
hoping all you great minds here can help me
many thanks
gemma

Gemma, after booting with the correct version of startup disk. Type the command "sys c:" this will copy three files to the correct location on the drive including command.com.

Try this:
Boot to Dos Standalone and type:
path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command<Enter>
win<Enter>If that works, check back

"invalid parameters" means you didn't enter the command correctly.
If you're getting vfat errors, then it wouldn't appear to be a problem with the DOS startup axis (IO.SYS, COMMAND.COM)
Tried scanning the hard drive from the bootdisk?

It's hard to figure how "copy a:command.com c:\" could give "invalid parameters".
Maybe:
copy a:\command.com c:\
but that's really stretching it.
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

Just because it's entered correctly here in the forum is no guarantee it was entered correctly on the machine
"invalid parameter" means just that - they screwed up when specifying something after the actual command - most likely a spacing error but could be nearly anything

hi all
thanks for the responses
i now cant even get it read/start from the boot disk.
I have tried all of the above.i just get the pleases enter the location of command.com and the c>
where else on c drive ( apart form just c and windows), could it possibly be??
if i try to start in safe mode i get to
VFAT error system halted and a little cursor
which is probably a seperate problemI have looked in side the computer everything seems to be attached correctly though i could not be 100% sure as i am not an expert on the inside of the computer.
i would love to solve this,
thanks

Unless specifically told otherwise, DOS/Windows will ignore any other copies of command.com beyond the root copy (c:\command.com) - not positive about the one in c:\windows, but fairly sure it's a 'spare'
Booting from a diskette is (pretty much) independant of whatever problems are on the HDD. If you cannot do so, then either your floppy or floppy drive has gone bad, or this machine has greater problems, such as memory failure.

"if i try to start in safe mode i get to VFAT error system halted" Just how are you trying to start in safe mode when you can not get past the "command.com" error ?

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=139063It is likely that you will need to enter bios setup and change the boot order to have the floppy as first boot device.
Befor running any commands from the boot floppy be sure it is the same version as on the comp.

Kind of what I was wondering in my #3 - if you can't get past the DOS bootup process, entering Safe Mode does not seem likely at all.
They were claiming to able to boot from a floppy initially
