I can't get more than 557KB (conventional)
I'd like to know if there's any way of using XMS memory.

Not directly - if the games require conventional mem, you'd need to free some up by loading drivers etc into upper memory.

M$ article here

If you've already tried that & that's the best that you can get, might want to use a bootdisk with limited drivers loaded and/or take advantage of the multiple configuration feature built into DOS

Many old games will give instructions for making a bootdisk if low conventional memory is an issue. It's an old problem.
