Reply: (edit)The CD DOS driver is not required for the normal operation of Windows. Replacing it (and it should be on your 98 CD) will likely stop the DOS error messages, but may not affect whatever problem you are having with the drive. Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience

Reply: (edit)All too well ; ) Yeah, ok, you don't need to load the CD's DOS drivers (or config.sys or autoexec.bat) for Windows & your CD to operate. With the actual DOS driver gone, config.sys still looks for it, and that is the source of some of your error messages. I'm doubtful if replacing the file will correct performance problems you're experiencing with the drive, but it won't hurt to try. The other errors - 'bad command or filename' indicates an unrecognized command is being entered from autoexec.bat - you may want to examine that file with msconfig Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience

Reply: (edit)Well, that's something - but, as mentioned, you could dispense with autoexec.bat & config.sys entirely and Windows wouldn't miss them. You might want to open autoexec.bat with notepad and post it here for a look. Not really keen on IM Never argue with an idiot. Reply: (edit)ok here's my autoexec.bat (check mark) echo off REM to make a dos boot diskette, etc... Reply: (edit)Entries prefaced by 'REM ' (remark) are not loaded. You can dispense with the DRVSPACE.SYS/ line unless you are using drive compression (unlikely, but possible) - just uncheck it in msconfig. C:\Progra~1\NETWOR~\MCAFEE~1;C:\PROGRAM~1\DBCBT - is this program installed, or does the folder even exist? If not, that would be the source of the 'bad command..' message. Of interest:
rem the below DOS CD-ROM Driver is not required to run windows 98 I'm doubtful if you need to be loading *any* of that stuff, unless you boot to straight DOS frequently, and require CD access. Kind of a mess, in general. Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience

Reply: (edit)"I'm doubtful if you need to be loading *any* of that stuff, unless you boot to straight DOS frequently, and require CD access. Kind of a mess, in general." I agree. This is all for a dos environment basically. What happens if you uncheck the "Process config.sys" and "Process autoexec.bat" files in MSCONFIG and then start your machine?

Reply: (edit)Yeah - the only thing that might be desirable is the McAffee line (and path for it) - and it's debatable if that is even still installed. Unless being setup for DOS is required, I would agree - disable both through msconfig and see if they're missed. Never argue with an idiot. MSCDEX VERSION 2.25 DriveM=Driver IDECD000 unit 0 bad command or filename how can i fix it so i can still run the mscdex cus it was runing correctly before th is happened...

Reply: (edit)Yes, in msconfig remove the check marks for config.sys and autoexec.bat. Regarding the rest of the topic, the point is; you don't need to load dos drivers to run the cd in windows. The only exception would be is if the cdrom is a proprietary drive. (Most of) these drives were run off of a sound card or other small interface card. If your cdrom data cable goes directly to the motherboard connector/controller, it's an atapi (IDE) drive.

Reply: (edit)Yes - James - even your config.sys is telling you you don't need to load this stuff for Windows. If your CD-ROM works with the 'oak' driver, then it's IDE Your startups consist of a bunch of duplicated 'remarks', unecessary drivers and an attempt to load an uninstalled program. You don't need any of that for Windows. If you do need to maintain a setup for booting to DOS, a little tidying up is in order. Never argue with an idiot. Reply: (edit)Depends on what the emulator requires. The only useful DOS driver being loaded was for your CD drive - if you don't need the CD from a DOS boot, nothing to worry about. Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience
