Last week I bought a Philips PCRW5232 CD ReWriter to replace my original CDROM. It came with Nero 5.5 software. The new drive works in so far as it reads audio and data CDs no problem. However, it doesn't read blank CDs. I've tried both blank CDRWs and CDRs and in Windows Explorer I just get a "D:\ is not accessible" message. I took the driver back to the shop and they replaced it. The new one did exactly the same thing. I went back to the shop and they tested the blank CDs, which were OK. They also tested CDs in the driver I'd returned earlier - OK. I'm not very PC literate but it seems reasonable to assume the driver's OK but something in my machine is stopping it working properly. I've tried reinstalling Nero several times but that doesn't help. I've been all week on this. Has anyone any suggestions?
Thanks

What are you expecting to "read" on a blank CD? The drive will be inaccessible until data is written on the disc.

.... and CD-RW's will need to be formatted with Nero before they are recognised. Right click InCD icon in system tray next to clock (unless they've changed their ideas since mine).

As stated. INCD should be running in the system tray, and 'should' detect a rewriteable disc. Check your documentation & settings
Nero is currently at version 7, and the drive I purchased last year came with v6

I see I made a mistake in my #2. Take out the word "recognised" and substitute "useable".
It is reasonable to get that error message if you try to open a blank CD-R from the drive icon but you should not get it with blank CD-RW's.

Enable the DMA mode in windows as follows:
(Click start => setup =>control panel =>device manager =>CD-ROM setting, then set the DMA mode enabled.)

You took it to the shop and they actually replaced it? Must be the local Blondes-R-Us fix it shop.

InCD is installed and there's an icon in the system tray, plus the 'Launch InCD When Blank Disk is Inserted' box is ticked under options. However, nothing happens when I insert a blank disk, CDR or CDRW.
When I go into Control Panel>System>Device Manager and then into Settings for the Philips drive there isn't a DMA box to tick. The only options are Disconnect, Sync Data Transfer and Auto Insert Notification (which is ticked).
When I go into Nero>Choose Recorder, the only device available is Image Recorder. Then if I take the blank disk out and put in a copied audio disk, the Philips device appears under Image Recorder in Choose Recorder.
Best not to assume I'm not missing something really obvious. But what?

Is there no DMA box or is it greyed out so you can't change it?
Try updating the ASPI drivers.
Is the burner on the same cable as the HD? If so, put it by itself on the secondary cable. Make sure it's jumpered correctly. If it's already by itself on the secondary, go into cmos/bios setup and make sure everything is enabled for the IDE controllers.
Try installing the chipset drivers for the motherboard. Consider uninstalling the InCD and see if the burner is seen properly when you open Nero.

Just to let you know I've managed to get the thing working. I'd deleted and reinstalled Nero umpteen times without success. What I hadn't done was delete the other bits of software that came with Nero (InCD, EasyWrite etc). After I did this I reinstalled Nero only, and, to my amazement, it worked! No idea why. Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

InCD works exclusively with rewriteable medias (CD-RW, CD-MRW, DVD-RW, DVD RW or DVD MRW). Medias which can only be written once cannot be written using InCD.Good research DAVEINCAPS!!,You are a very knowledgeable person.

We're glad you got it going. Whenever I use bundled Nero software I just install Nero Express. I figure the less stuff you install the less likely you are to have problems.

Sometimes it's good to start fresh
fwiw - the only problem I ever had with Nero was when I updated the ASPI drivers as per that link. Resolved when I went back to the old ones.
(InCD is only for rewritables? Gosh - who knew? Oh, wait.... )

Some people fancy their use of the written word and then unknowingly revert back to acronyms.{fwiw}
