Do I need these Zip files?

Comment:

Looking in my C: partition - which I keep for the Operating System, and keep a recent Ghost image - I find there are a number of .ZIP files, approximately 30MB of them. Most are in Java sub-folders. Oh, and a few JAR files too (what are they doing there?? I thought they were Linux compressions.)

Do I need to keep these? If I ever needed to do a re-install I have the CD that I used to install Java. Will anything 'break'?

I ran a search just using your sig.
Got a page full (40 hits) where you do nothing but ask questions.

This is a forum. An exchange of ideas. Have you ever thought about contributing instead of just taking?

You're right, sekirt. I do ask a lot of questions. And have deepened my knowledge of computers in the process. I've always been grateful for the help I get.

It's not true that I don't contribute, but not very often. Usually there is someone else who knows more than I do. More often I really don't know the answer.

I have done the same search that you did, sekirt, and none of the places to which I contributed came up.

If others others think I should stop, I will leave this forum. It's a great place to be, and I don't want to create hard feelings.

Personally, I like some of your questions as they often offer a challenge.

I also remember that you used to provide help to others.

I enjoy coming to Computing.net but if people stopped asking questions then there would be no point in coming here.

Ask on.

What's the path to these files in question?

Thanks for those kind words, Bryan. I feel better.

They are in many folders. Quite a few in:-c:\windows\java\packages;
c:\windows\application data\sun\java\deployment\ cache\javapi\v1.0\jar (yes ZIP files these);
c:\program files\spybot - search & destroy\ updates.

and JAR files: -
c:\program files\java\j2re.1.4.1_03\lib
c:\program files\Open office.org1.1.4\program\ classes;
c:\program files\openoffice.org1.1.4\help\en;

Do programs extract files as they need them, or are they left over from the install process. In which case I could move them to another partition?

Hi Terry@nz, sekirt, Bryan, hello everyone,

The paths you mentioned above are two different pieces of software. The one in C:\Windows\Java is Microsoft Java VM. Microsoft Java Virtual Machine is no longer available from Microsoft directly and is no longer supported by Microsoft. If needed one could still download it from here.

The other paths that you mentioned are for Sun Java which is the alternative for Microsoft Java VM. You can always download it from here if you ever reinstall Windows.

To check and see if you are using Microsoft Java VM perform the following;

Within Internet Explorer click on Tools and Internet Options.

Select the Advanced tab.

Under Java is Microsoft VM listed and if so is it checked?

If not you can uninstall it using this procedure.

I am not using Microsoft VM but have left it alone as it is only 11MB.

HTH

Best Regards,
Mesich

Hi Mesich. Good to see you here.

Terry, I am on a WinXP machine and it does not have or use MS's VM but my Win98 machine uses both MS' VM and Sun's Java. They co-exist just fine.

They files, are as you suspect, used as needed by the respective VM (Virtual machines).

j2re.1.4.1_03 is an older version and some pages require the newer version. Mesich has provided a link but the Sun Java download site (15.5mb) does provide a very fast feed. I got a copy in 21 seconds from them (I do have a 6mb cable connection though) and I don't know how fast Meisch's link will support.

I don't have or use Open Office so I don't know about those.

Re: Spybot updates. In looking at mine it would appear that they are where the updates download to prior to installing the updates. For example the Includes.zip file is in the folder you mention but there is also a folder named "Includes" that also contains the individual files likely contained within that same .zip file.
Worse comes to worse with Spybot after reomving the .zip files you could always download the updates again.

Does the PC you are working on need this extra space to stay alive? If so then it is time to add an additional hard drive. Ebay has even new 10GB drives for less than $20 if money is an issue. Or, wait for a sale that offers a rebate and pick up a 20-80 GB drive for less than $30.

There are those who ask questions, those who help, and those who do both at times. Seems reasonable enough to me.

Hello all.

Not to pick on Terry...

Yes Terry's questions are both interesting and of the kind that are often hard to use Google to get answers.

However, I feel a certain abuse of forums takes place when people post questions instead of doing some research themselves. And I feel there is an abuse when all they do is ask and not contribute.

I help a few people privately (also personal friends) and it gets as much or more involved sometimes than here in the forum. So it is not because I don't enjoy helping people. And people that post back with comments are the ones that I enjoy helping the most.

So, I would encourage anyone to contribute from what they have learned. Even if it is only a link to another post or Google. Doesn't have to be Einstein type answers.

And Terry, I am not at all suggesting that you should leave this forum. Far be it from me to even come close to that kind of thing. Think that would be Justin's authority. Not little ole me.

Sure thing sekirt, we could certainly do with some more helpers around these parts - they seem to be getting a bit thin on the ground.

Having said that, it takes time for folk to feel they are ready to contribute and that's very much a variable. I happened to start helping fairly quickly but I'd been sniffing around computers (DOS & W31) for years before I even posted my first W95 question back in '99.

One thing is certain, none of us ever stop learning. Great forum, great folks, all are welcome.

Thanks, all of you. I do use Google as my first attempt to find answers. Often I find the answer there. I also try to find answers on the "go find" search-thingie at the top of this page. I prefer to be independent, and to do my own hard work. Occasionaly I have done a Google for other equirers.
But sometimes - like this time - I don't know how to phrase the question. So I ask.

Enough of all that - it's rather off-topic. To get back to what started this ...

Bryco, as often, knew what I wanted: these files *are* used.
Ages ago I took someone's advice, downloaded and installed the Sun Java, made the changes that mesich mentioned. Two different people thought it was risky to delete MS's Java, so I left it just in case.
Spybot's ZIPs are small; they won't make much difference.
OpenOffice ZIPs I hadn't noticed until Bryco asked his question. I'll try at the OpenOffice site.

It's not that I am short of space on my drive - I have the old 8GB that came with the computer 'only' 7 years ago now used for backup, and a newer 80GB split into a number of partitions.

My concern was with the backup files which I keep recent, using Norton's Ghost. I wanted to keep them small. I don't bother trying to repair registries, just reload the latest GHO file. Works great for me.

I've had a look at the zips in SpyBot/Update.

On my machine without exception their contents appear in other SpyBot folders, so they seem redundant now the Updates have been incorporated.

I then moved the Zips into a subfolder off Updates which I called "Moved from Updates folder".

I ran my regstry cleaners and it didn't complain - which is a good sign. SpyBot ran too. Moving them would have disabled them if they had any value. I intend leaving them there a while (get updates and Run again etc) and if there is no backlash I shall delete them.

You may care to try the same (see if yours are elsewhere as files too). My feeling is that they are unecessary and have already done their job. I also had a file called downloaded.ini which looked similarly redundant when I peered inside it, so I moved that out too.

As you say, they are not very large tho.
