Our win2000 server box is on a small LAN with an ADSL connection using Enternet 300 to the internet.
Previously we had a win98 box acting as the server.
Now and then we sometimes find we cannot get the internet. But a p2p programme busy downloading still continues.
The connection is still there.
But no new connections can be made.
Ping reports 'name unknown'.
So it seems our DNS server which ipconfig /all says is at 10.0.0.1 is going down.
Any ideas? Help. Suggestions will be well received.

I know absolutely nothing about Win2K but if you have a firewall you may need to configure it to allow your ISP DNS server(s) full UDP access In and Out.
---
It looks like this in Kerio Personal Firewall v2 and Tiny Personal Firewall v2 using a standard ISP which relies on Microsoft's Dial-Up Networking (not a software based ISP like AOL):
Description: DNS
Protocol: UDP
Direction: Both
Local Port: Any
Application: Any
Remote Address: Your ISP DNS Address goes here
Remote Port (Single Port): 53
Rule Valid: Always
Action: Permit
Logging: NoneThis rule is for allowing your Internet Service Provider (ISP) connection to properly work.
