DNS errors

Have tried everything I can think of to fix this DNS error bug. I can log onto server OK, but my browser (IE5.5) doesn't get the IP address it needs to connect. I get a ping feedback to my ISP using their numerical URL, but the textural one just gets the "unknown host" reply. Have run a virus scan, defrag, scandisk, done a clean IE reinstall etc etc, but still no joy. Netscape reports it as "unable to create a network socket connection" which I suppose is their jargon for IE's DNS error. The only problem I'm aware of is a DMA controller conflict showing up in Device Manager. Not sure how to correct this. Have removed it, but conflict still there after Windows replaces it. But I assume there's no link here with my DNS error. I use a 56K dial-up modem. My ISP helpdeskers have run out of ideas and so have I. Anyone had the same hassles and found any answers? Here's thanks in anticipation.
Did u set your DNS servers IP adresses? If not, go to My computer, remote network and right click on the connection you normally use and select properties. From there, go to server ( at the top), select TCP/IP settings and make it so that you can enter the IP ads of your ISP. You will need to know them first.
