Hello Everyone, here is my problem. I signed up for adelphia cable internet, I installed it on my laptop via usb with no problem, I then unplugged the modem from the power and the laptop and hooked it up to my pc via eathernet and pluged the modem back it,I then went to install the software, well it gets to the DNS test and fails. So i tried it with an usb instead, it fails. so after 4.5 hours on the phone with tech support the problem is narrowed down to my DNS and my os. Is there a way i can fix this problem? I belive that i have to reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows 98, which i really want to avoid. The modem works and can get online, the people at tech support where able to contact my modem and read right to my nic card, i can ping out to ip address, but cannot ping urls. please help. I use windows 98 first edition and have internet ex. 5.5. PLEASE HELP!

right click on network neighborhood, go to properties. go to tcp/ip -> . find the dns tab. enable dns. and there should also be something about specifying a dns server. see if you can get the dns server ip from you isp and put them in there. those stupid cable guys dont know anything about networking. all they know how to do is run wires. they should have been able to tell you to do this. never call tech support. those guys really dont know what theyre doing, theyre just reading information off of screen, typing in what you say, reading off screen....... here on the forum we know our stuff.

ok i'll try that, but i thought that the dns file (s) were currupt. I will only need to enter in the DNS info once right? or everytime i start the computer or if i shut off the modem and reconect it. That wont change anything will it?

Entering the DNS servers in the TCP properties for your NIC will specify a static DNS setting that is stored until changed. In other words, you do not have to ever change this again as long as your DNS server IPs do not change. Not the preferred option since there is no guarantee that your provider will not change the IPs of their primary and secondary DNS servers. Usually not a problem but I have had it happen.

When you run winipcfg, or ipconfig /all, do you get any DNS servers in the listing for your NIC?

I had an interesting problem with a 98SE machine once where after reinstalling the OS and uninstalling/reinstalling both the NIC and the TCP/IP stack I still couldn't get the machine to resolve hostnames. Everytime I tried to bind the TCP stack to an adapter I would receive NDetect errors. Never figured it out!
