DMA won't initiate

I have a new computer with Win98SE. 1.4 GHz AMD CPU. In Device Manager, both the Plextor CD-RW and the Toshiba DVD/Rom players have check boxes for enabling DMA. When I check these and reboot, the boxes are empty again -- the DMA just won't initiate. The Maxtor 61GB hard drive has NO check box for DMA. Any ideas on this -- is it normal to not be able to enable DMA in Win98?
