You have lost your video drivers - the change of drives/installation of Win did that! You need the drivers for your video card, that's all - do you have them?? If not then do you know the card manufacturer - a visit to the web site will get them.

Not necessary to open case!!

Download either/both of

1. Belarc from

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

2. Aida32 from

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html

When run both will give the info on what's inside your PC and will give the name and version of your video driver.

Post back if you want more help.

When you do a clean install of Windows, you also need to install the device drivers. You'll need drivers for the motherboard chipset, video, sound, modem, etc. Windows *may* load generic drivers, but installing the latest up-to-date versions is preferrable.

Apparently Win98 didn't have any generic drivers for your video card. You'll have to somehow determine the make/model of the card, then see if you can download the appropriate Win98 compatible drivers for it. You could have gotten that info from your old HDD before you removed it.

You now have a few choices...

1. open the case & get the info directly from the video card. If you have onboard video & don't know the make/model of your motherboard, see if you can find that info printed on the board. Then go to the manufacturer's website & download the driver.

2. temporarily install your old HDD as a slave & find the info in the old drive. However, since you have to open the case to do this anyway, it may be easier to just do #1

3. try the software approach. Download/install Everest Home Edition & see if it tells you what you need to know.

"Ok im having a hard time writing these to a disk (i have no floppy)since i dont have a cdwriter??"

You have'nt a floppy, or a CD-RW drive?? If that is some kind of typo, and you do have a floppy drive. Use it, to take them home, the floppy disks. Just use a file sp.... or even a small USB device (storage), as they are cheap, and easy to get...

I guess, first tell us for sure, what you have, or don't have.

Have you no CD with the drivers already on it?

There is no program which will have drivers because they are specific to your machine.

If you have a CD player on your machine you could get someone to burn Aida32 or Everest onto a CD. The latter read the info straight from your hardware.

These are preferable to Belarc which often reports the drivers that happen to be installed (even if wrong).

You could use the same approach to getting drivers. Best to use CD-R disks (not CD-RW) and finalise them.

Jeez, just go out and buy a floppy drive. You've got to have the proper tools to get the job done. Besides, a PC without a floppy drive is like a car with a flat. The trend toward floppy-less PC's is a joke.

(sorry about the shout)

Not much harder, than that, or less. Depends, how you look at it.

Manufacturer/Model: ?
As you do know this, what is it?? Be able to tell/see, if it has an external 3.5 bay that way. If it doesn't, and has an extra (not used) 5.25 external bay. You could use that, with another piece (adapter), besides the floppy drive. Even possibly, use a USB floppy drive.(<more money) All kinds, of ways and means, to a good ending.

The driver issue (or lack off) is a common problem when installing a fresh copy of Windows. As much as we warn people to make sure they have all the necessary drivers BEFORE they format or install a new HDD, it's still a common forum question.

Many times, Windows will load generic drivers (if they happen to be included on the CD) but it's generally preferrable to install "proper" drivers. You need drivers for the motherboard chipset, video, sound, LAN, modem, etc. Apparently Win98 doesn't have a generic driver version for your video card (or onboard graphics). If you can get online with the PC as it is, all you have to do is download the drivers directly to your HDD, then install them. If that's not a possibility, you have to transfer them from another source (floppy, thumbdrive, CD, etc). Since the floppy & thumbdrive isn't gonna happen, all you're left with is the CD. Are you 100% sure the drivers you downloaded to your coworker's PC are the correct ones? All you have to do is right click on the file that you wanna burn, then put your mouse pointer on SEND TO, then select the DVD/CD-RW from the list. Then go to MY COMPUTER, double click on the DVD/CD-RW icon, & look at the menu along the left...click on "Write these files to CD"...then follow the instructions.

Ok I have figured out the write to disk thing- got everest, installed it - got my info, just dont know exactly what info i need?? my motherboard chipset is :intel brookdale - G 1'845GV ?? Intel SeaBreeze D845GVSR(3 PCI, 2 DIMM,AUDIO,Video)I have a place everest gave me to go download @ (it says driver download)@ http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/genbios.htm is this where I need to go & if so what exactly do I look for to download? I am still so confused with all this as I went to this site and there are too many options for me to know which I need?? Mainly just need the video card driver I suppose for now - so that I can install my my internet program (Bellsouth w/ router, dsl)wont install w/ the 480x640 - after I fix the display problem I should be able to install my internet then use my computer to go on-line & d/l the rest of the drivers I need, right from my own computer, (I hope??)~Angel~

This is the download page for that motherboard/chipset. I'm not sure if the 845GVSR specifies the motherboard or the chipset so all the drivers there may not apply. I assume you have on-board graphics and not an add-on graphics card.

In the drivers section install #7 first--the chipset update. Then install the others as necessary. The video drivers are #3. Don't worry about #1--the bios update.

Hi, Next time CLONE the old drive to the new one. Most drive manufacturers supply a suitable program with a new drive. Maxtor's Max Blast older versions work with all drives and has the feature. Free Downloads!

Luck, Jim
