Hi, Recently I installed directX 9, since then my computer has problems playing certain games it will act as if it's going to start them but it'll like freeze on a black screen and my monitor will just flash. According to the directX9 diagnostic tool it has the same problem with direct draw 7 and 8 layer images. I did a complete restore hoping it was just the directx9 and installed directx8.1 and the problem still occurs. I'm using windows 98se, and have a geforce2 mx400. Please let me know if it is my graphix card or monitor, and how to fix it thanx.

Hi

Your machine worked fine before dx 9. Going back to the old version didn't help. I think there must be a remenant of dx 9 or whatever else got installed along with dx 9 - still on the system somewhere.

I have gathered that down-grading dx was a real pain and the use of a special dx remover was required.

What version of dx 9 was loaded?

You don't need DX9, you probably don't even need DX8. Your card drivers were written to run with whatever version of DX was current at the time. Without a driver update, you may be causing problems for yourself without any benefits.

Hi again

If you have reformated then all traces of the previous install should be gone. Whatever problems the last dx 9 had - should be wiped.

It won't be the first time the first attempt to install dx does not work. Like OtheHill mentions, if your present version supports all the features of your card, you have to size up the benifits of moving to the newer dx version.

Your should really benchtest the video card and find out what features it does or doesn't support.
