i recently wrote of a display problem with my p111 with win98 where a tiny bit of the left hand side of the display comes up on the right and things are unreadable and bits of graphics stay on the screen when something is closed. someone replied that it was a monitor problem but i'm pretty sure it's not as i have fiddled with the settings and there is nothing wrong with the display during the startup and bios. files print out perfectly but can't be made out on screen. the problem happens on and off (more on than off lately). can any body offer another explanation?

The problem might be your graphic card. Have you try changing it. If you are using PCI slot for your graphic card, try another empty slot.

Did you try updating the drivers for your graphics card. I had a user once whose display was messed up just like yours and it was because his computer was using the wrong display drivers for his video card. Find out who makes your graphics card go to their site and download the latest drivers for your card corresponding to your operating system.
