I have an S3 Trio64V+PCI(765)display adapter. My monitor is Samsung Syncmaster 152N. I can not get 16 bit color at screen resolution 1024x768. It only gives me 256 colors. Any help would be appreciated.

Download and install the proper drivers for the video card and monitor, see if that helps:

I am guessing the graphics display is integrated on MBoard. If so you may need to allocate more system memory to the graphic subsystem. That setting would be found in the BIOS screens. If you find a setting but it won't allow you to change then you may need to add more system memory.

If the graphics is an add in card then check the amount of RAM on the card.

The driver for the monitor was on the monitor installation cd and is working properly.

The display adapter is the original and the drivers are from the Windows 98 cd.

The driver for the display adapter on the manufacturer's site is older than the one on the Windows cd and has the same capabilities. Still no 16 bit color for resolution 1024x768.

You can find out the RAM usage by running SIW.exe. Find SIW at the link below.

I found some specs on the PB680 motherboard:

Video: built-in,S3 Trio64v+ PCI graphics
controller.
1024x768, 256 colors with 1 MB.
1280x1024, 256 colors with 2 MB.
VESA display channel supported.
DPMS compliant.

Note: uses S3 Inc. Trio64v+ PCI video
chip.
S3 Trio64v+ is compatible with IBM
VGA standards.
S3 Trio64v+ motherboards have 1MB
expandable to 2 MB.

Any chance of overriding the on-board graphics through the PCI slots.

You can install a PCI graphics card. You would need to read the manual for your MBoard to see if any special effort is required to disable the integrated graphics. Normally inserting an add in card is enough. Sometimes you need to do more.

Some card needs to be taken when selecting an addin card. Your MBoard is obviously old. PCI slot standards have changed over the years. I would suggest you try and find a used PCI card. Something with maybe 16MB of RAM should do fine. Even *MB will give you the 16 million colors. I will stat that I personally can't see the difference between 16 bit & 32 bit color. Running at 16 bit should give higher refresh rates.

Well, ignore all the above. I just found a diagram of your MBoard. Your MBoard has NO expansion slots for a graphics card.

Where are you located, UK? I suggest for less than $50 US you should be able to pickup a complete computer without monitor that will be better than what you currently have.

The only slot on the entire MBoard is a riser slot. To my knowledge that can't be used for graphics. Even if it could, would the OP be able to find a card for the right price, if at all. Better to upgrade to something a little newer anyway. Around my house I periodically see cases setting out to the curb. These are 1Gz. computers.

of course you are correct, I guess I'm just
trying to find if the poster has a riser installed, currently. I just recently picked this up for a friends older computer.

I'm using a S3 Trio64V2-DX/GX (775/785) PCI card I got on ebay recently for around $9 or so. It has 2 mb of memory with the last 1 mb of memory held in chip sockets where you could take mine out and put in your motherboard I assume. Almost all the S3 cards I've ever seen have the extra sockets for that last 1 mb of memory, with the first 1 mb being soldered in.

The memory may not be compatible. I've never been able to find a cross reference for the various video ram chips so I've had to resort to trial and error.

I've got several hundred 1, 2 and 4 meg PCI video cards I'd love to get rid of for $9 apiece if anyone's interested. . .

I imagine Frank has the riser card as the PC would have come with it and there wouldn't be any reason to remove it.

Below is the link I used to determine what the MBoard capabilities are. If I'm not mistaken the graphics is just a chip and the RAM is socketed in 4 sockets.

Yeah, it's got 1 meg (2 chips) soldered on and then 2 sockets for an additional 1 meg. I don't know if an added video card will override the onboard. He'd probably just have to try it and see.

The motherboard manual states if a new video card is installed, the new video card's display overrides the display of the onboard video.

I have two extra PCI slots on the riser card.

Also two slots are empty on the chipset which probably means that I have 1 MB of video memory.

I would only upgrade the video if I could find a card under $10.

My only dilemna now is to find the right card. Any suggestions?

Local computer shops, computer shows, eBay. Below is a link to a forum that has a trader subforum. You can post the you are looking for a PCI based video card for $10. See if anything pops up.

You'd probably just need to put the card in the slot and start the computer. If it overrides the onboard on its own then you don't need to worry about jumpers or cmos settings. When 98 starts you should get the 'new hardware found' message.

I'll post back when I get it.

I found a 'stealth 3d 2000' with an S3 86C325 chipset and 4 meg of ram. Here's some info:

http://www.aberdeeninc.com/ABCATG/D...

http://stason.org/TULARC/pc/graphic...

I put it in an old P-I to test it. On that I could only get the resolution up to 1024 x 768 but that may have been because the PnP drivers for the HP monitor I was using wouldn't allow anything higher. Anyway, even at that resolution I got options for 16 bit and 24 bit color. I think 98 had generic drivers and I also downloaded drivers from S3. Diamond made the card and they may have something newer if they're still around. I noticed some drivers on driverguide also.

If you're interested let me know. I thought I'd set up a 'buy it now' on ebay if you have an account there. If not I can just send it. Maybe $8 total (and that would include the shipping).

frank didn't jump on that, it was the perfect upgrade for his machine, for next to nothing. I was going to give him until the last day and, if he didn't take I may have.

Yeah, after I didn't hear anything I changed it to a more generic description. I'll have to start putting the rest of the cards on ebay too. Most are 1 and 2 meg. I must have used most of the 4 meg cards a few years ago when I was putting together some cheap P-II's and K6-2's.

I've been keeping them for the gold. As a matter of fact I've been buying old cpus on ebay when the price is right.

I'd accumulated about 100 pounds of ceramic cpus from computers I'd gotten at auction. I ended up selling them for $1000 about seven years ago when I needed the money. I didn't think of trying to sell on ebay then. I know now I could have gotten more if I had.

Now I'm hanging on to them as an investment. I figure their value will always be pegged to the price of gold. Plus, like old stamps and coins, some are worth more than the gold they contain.
