Hello guys!!

I'm fixing a workstation with windows 98 installed. Now the user told me that it has 2 HDDs both has 2 partitions. So, under My Computer you can see 4 HDD partitions. Now my question is this.. how can I know which partitions belong to the same HDD (Primary or Secondary)? Under Windows XP you just right click on My Computer Icon then choose Manage then to Disk Management and you can see which partitions belongs to the same HDD.

How can I attain this on Windows 98 SE.

Thanks in advance and more power.

Primary dos partition on first drive = C:
Primary dos partition on second drive = D:
Logical drive on first drive = E:
Logical drive on second drive = F:

Here's some additional info:

Note that the second physical drive can be partitioned without a primary dos partition thus changing the drive letter assignment.

Also be aware that removing a partition or logical drive will change the default drive letters of those that remain. For example, if you remove the C: drive partition then the primary dos partition on the second drive becomes C:, the logical drive on the first drive becomes D: and the logical drive on the second becomes E:. Because of that people often end up formatting the wrong drive after making partition changes.

Download SIW and look at Storage Devices and Logical Disks. Find SIW below.

Just to say DAVEINCAPS that that's not always the case. It depends on which partition was created first. I could create a partition on the 2nd physical drive and it would be called C:, then I could create a primary drive on the first physical drive and that would be called D:.

I would just use FDISK and use it's own ability to display partition info.

There's a lot of possibilities I guess. I should have stressed those are the default drive letter rules.

But as far as I know, given 2 drives with active partitions a PC will always boot from the primary master, regardless of the order of creation. Of course fdisk will only allow you to create one active partition. To get 2 active drives you'd have to use something besides fdisk or disable the already active one in cmos so the OS only sees one drive and then re-enable it after setting the second partition active.

Now if an active drive was on the secondary master and a non-active one on the primary master then it'd boot from the secondary master and that would be C:. I'm not sure how the virtual drive letters would work out in that situation.
