The Win98 defrag engine is quite slow, and so I downloaded WinMe's defrag, as many have suggested it. But my problem is when I run the installl.bat that comes with the download, I get the message "A device attached to the system is not functioning." So I can't rename my current version of defrag.exe to defrag.old and place the new defrag.exe into the current folder, using the install.bat. So how do I rename it manually? And can I just run the defrag.exe I just downloaded without replacing the old (Win98) one?

And one more thing. Many also suggested PerfectDisk. So I downloaded an evaluation. But with some problem. When it analyze (similar to "checking disk for error" I guess), it keep stopping at 27%, and it display "Stopped by user" even though I didn't touch anything. So it's not able to go ahead and defrag. Any idea? I haven't defrag my system for awhile, and really slowing down. Thanks in advance for any help.

You likely already know this but empty your internet temp files to help speed things up and make sure you shut down any running programs and shut off your screen saver. It will likely tell you that you need to run scandisk first to correct errors. I've defraged computers that have not been defragged in a year with 98's defrag. It might take all night depending on how much data it has to sort out and how much space you got left on the drive.
Hope that helps.
Good luck

With ME defrag , you can put it on the desktop , doubleclick on it & run .

To rename , Windows Explorer > Windows , right click on defrag , click on rename .

I have been using it for years & all I do is make sure it is spelt defrag , copy & paste it into the Windows folder & click yes to replace the old .

Hi Marjoh, blender, Johnw, hi all,

Everything has been said above... nethertheless, here is my way with slight differences (slight in words, big in effects ;-)

- Replace C:\Windows\Defrag.exe by the defrag program for Win-ME (as you began to do)

- Close any program on the taskbar
- Delete useless files in unusual folders
- Clean disk by Start/Run/type Cleanmgr and click on OK/OK again to validate C: exam/check all of the boxes and click on OK (C:\Windows\Temp C:\Windows\TIF C:\Windows\DPF and the Bin)
- From Windows Explorer, right click on C:/Properties/Tools tab and ask for Scandisk
- Uncheck screen saver
- Restart the computer into safe mode
- again double click on "My Computer"/right click on C:/Properties/Tools tab and ask for Defrag...

Done every week, Defrag (for Millenium) takes only 20 minutes.

- Check screen saver
- Restart the computer in normal mode

To this procedure, I personally add other steps:
- Delindex to begin with
- EasyCleaner to -1-clean up Temp files throughout the hard disk and -2-erase orphan keys in the registry
(there are other programs such as RegCleaner, JV16 or others) -I do that after CleanMgr-
- another CleanMgr after EasyCleaner (explanations: you must delete files before EasyCleaner as it is the deleted files that will "create" orphan keys) then another CleanMgr after EasyCleaner as there will be other deleted files)
- after Defrag, I add RegClean (don't confude with RegCleaner) which is a program by MicroSoft able te check and fix some errors in the Registry.

- I run my CleanUp weekly
- I avoid to empty the Bin between 2 Defrags because it would create holes in the very middle of the hard disk -ie fragmentation- better to keep deleted files in the bin than to increase fragmentation!

HTH

Enjoy your day,
Gérard from Paris, France
P.S.: I didn't give any link as my utilities are well known; if you needed it, I could give them!
