disk boot failure....help!!

Hello Forum,
when I turn on puter it loads system info...then it says....DISK BOOT FAILURE,INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.....
I do not have the win98 setup cd...bought puter from friend...
Is there some way to get it back to recover?
Please help.....I have another puter win95 and copied the bootdisk for win98......is there some way to get it going my other puter working?

1) I assume you checked the obvious like there's not a floppy in the drive that it's trying to boot on.

2) There are sites on the web where you can d/l a boot disk.

3) Once you get booted, you may have to reload the system on top of itself, but wondering if maybe a scandisk or one of them scanreg/restore's is the way to try.

4) Could also be one of em viruses going around.

Anybody else have an opinion?

To start with, I agree you need to get a good startup floppy. Boot with it and run scandisk c: to make sure the hard drive is ok.

I've seen a bad cable cause that disk boot failure error. By cable I mean the one going from the hard drive to the motherboard. if you can try another cable to test if that's the problem.

This is what PCGuide has under Disk Boot Failure:

Yes...
I downloaded the win98 boot disk.....ran scandisk no probs....ran scanreg.....reported ... windows found an error in system files...n...was unable to fix...try deleting somes files to free up disk space on windows drive..if it does not work then you will need to install windows in a new directory... I can't even the c:\......invaid drive specification? what does all this mean?
I do not want to loose any info on puter...as stated before I have no win98 cd to start from scratch.....please tell me that there is some other way...a back door mabe....I did try cables...everything is set right.....went to pcguide but just can't find what exactly I need there....sorry but I'm at my wits....u c it's my sons puter ...and he is gonna think I crashed it as I did mine once.....+(&^%$@.....
please help before he gets back from trip

Remember I have no win98 cd.....so I guess I cannot do a format?
